World of StarCraft MOD lives – developer offered a job

It’s one of those heart-warming tales only found on the Internet: creative person develops something that infringes on copyright laws; owners of the copyright react; the internet mourns the loss of the new project; people hug and make-up; creative person is given a job.

That’s pretty much what’s happening here. Yesterday we posted that the modder (whose real name is actually Ryan Winzell) responsible for the MOD “World of StarCraft” had had his pre-alpha video removed from Youtube and a cease and desist message delivered from Blizzard’s zerglings lawyers. A lot happens in twenty-four hours though, and Blizzard has issued a response that turns the whole debacle around.

The “World of StarCraft” MOD is not being shut down by Blizzard, but it will have to carry on under a different title. Blizzard said the following in a statement:

“It was never our intention to stop development on the mod… with the name so closely resembling that of World of Warcraft, we wanted to discuss the title of the mod with the developer, and as part of our routine procedure, we contacted YouTube to request the video be removed while that discussion took place. We were also curious about the project and wanted to discuss with the developer what the mod entailed.”

Winzell posted via his MOD’s forums that he completely understood why Blizzard reacted the way they did. He is now looking into alternative titles like “StarCraft Universe” and “StarCraft Chronicles”.

And the job offer? That came from Riot Games, the team behind League of Legends. To add to the accumulating pile of awesome that Winzell can look forward to was an invitation to visit Blizzard’s offices to chat about his MOD project in person and to meet the people behind StarCraft II.
