With World of Warcraft continuing to hemorrhage users, people thought they might have to move away from the subscription model. Sure, they’re still the biggest MMORPG with 7.6 million subscribers, but they have to change their model to survive, right? Well, no.
WoW production director, J Allen Brack, insisted that going free-to-play isn’t even on the table at the moment:
We didn’t make the game to be free-to-play. We would have to rework the game pretty significantly in order to make it free-to-play. It’s not something we’re currently considering.
WoW is currently free-to-play for the first 20 levels – it was only natural to assume that meant it would eventually go the rest of the way. However, instead of worrying about changing payment models, Blizzard has announced another expansion: Warlords of Draenor. Here is the announcement video:
Warlords of Draenor lets players use a time travel mechanic to visit Draenor circa Warcraft 1-3 and lets the player instantly level a single character to 90 in a bid to lure lapsed players back into the game. Considering that the last expansion saw WoW lose a ton of subscribers, I’m not sure that this one will have the opposite effect.

Yeah, it was pretty awesome… for a while. I liked the Cataclysm expansion, because it finally allowed me to fly all over Azeroth with my FREAKING DRAGON, but I still think it came too late. Lich King was their weakest expac. Wasting awesome characters like Arthas (and previously Illidan) in a MMO should be a damn gaming sin.
ToshZA
November 11, 2013 at 14:03
Illidan was epic enough that we still ran that raid in Cata. Just for fun.

November 11, 2013 at 14:07
If there’s one thing GW2 has going for it, it’s not making older content obsolete by level. WoW could take a few books out of their encyclopedia.

November 11, 2013 at 14:11
Opened up GW2 again last night…for 5 min had it from BETA and still can not for the live of me get into this game. And im really trying
ToshZA
November 11, 2013 at 14:13
Its really different. I’ve stopped playing, but that’s more because I’m kinda burned out of MMO’s in general. The trick for GW2 is to get a good guild going, and get your character to a min of lvl 30. That’s when it really starts opening up. It gets better the more lvl 80’s you have as well. Don’t ask, its a very alt friendly game.
Unless you’re looking to equip them all with Legendaries.
Tarisma
November 11, 2013 at 14:15
Problem with GW2 I find is its too “casual” if that is an acceptable term. Its super fun to play but it I kinda feel that if I am not grinding for a legendary you’re not really going forward.
ToshZA
November 11, 2013 at 14:15
They’re shaking things up a bit though with the new content. The bosses and dungeons are getting harder. In fact my server (WSR) Still hasn’t downed the new Tequatl. I had to guest to get the achi’s done.
Tarisma
November 11, 2013 at 14:17
YA im on DESO so its nice and full but I think my problem is none of my friends play so I kinda feel “lonely” the guild I’m in is great but I don’t have time to dedicate myself properly so I will always remain a stranger

ToshZA
November 11, 2013 at 14:22
Eh, GW2 isn’t so grindy. Appreciate the beautiful world, and take your time. You can’t “outlevel” a zone, so if you’re having fun, just keep having fun.

Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)
November 11, 2013 at 14:31
Same here, I just can’t handle the grinding any more. One of the reasons why GTA Online is bumming me out is because MMOs killed my ability to do simple and repetitive tasks for hours at an end.

November 11, 2013 at 14:13
And it should it is like 8 years old. There needs to be a massive injection of new into the MMO market, GW2 was a step in the right direction, but it was only a step. Hopefully we’re in for a surprise in the coming years.
ToshZA
November 11, 2013 at 14:14
Yes, I hope so as well. MMO’s need to reinvent themselves. Totally. Like a celebrity makeover.

Harcore MMO would be awesome hard to die but death is death
ToshZA
November 11, 2013 at 15:19
Well, most traditional F2P MMO’s are kinda like that. GRIND for days to get a level, and you die once, that’s like 2 days work gone.
Otto_ki
November 11, 2013 at 13:42
True, the 60 day game time is now at R314…that is getting a tad much for an 8 year old game. But this months non WOW is gonna pay for my Battlefield 4 Premium 😛

They are correct in this going FTP for WoW at the moment would be a massive financial mistake not to mention a death sentence to the game, Maybe they need to consolidate some realms but I hardly think they need to pack it all in.

As much as I love the Panderan, I couldn’t be bothered to re-sub. At the time, I was happily playing Guild Wars 2, and I just couldn’t see myself grinding to 90. Come to think of it, I honestly don’t see anything getting me to resub. Free-to-play would have gotten me back temporarily, but I’ve outgrown World of Warcraft. In fact, I think I might have outgrown Blizzard all together. They’re just no longer the creative force that curled my toes.

Try Hearthstone man. Its epic fun. Pure Blizz Joy.
Also keen to try Heroes of the Storm.
Jim Lenoir (Banana Jim)
November 11, 2013 at 14:36
Nah. I think it also has to do with the people playing it. I’m all for gamers and stuff, but they nerd it up pretty bad. Taking it to real life with their role plays. That is a nerd level I can’t tolerate. And they comment as such in-game as well. I just want to give them a banana slap and tell them to come out of mommy’s basement.
ToshZA
November 11, 2013 at 15:18
Best part of Hearthstone? You never have to listen to the creative ways your mother apparently spends her evening. You never have to say a word to your opponent. Just kick his/her ass, or receive that ass kicking in return. No other BS involved.
Johan du Preez
November 11, 2013 at 15:13
Its difficult to play heartstone if you already play magic the gathering 🙂 It looks like packman in comparison.
ToshZA
November 11, 2013 at 15:16
I play both, and enjoy both. M:TG is far more in depth, and is a longer, more tactical game. It’s also less exciting. Think of it as the GT of card games. Hearthstone is less in depth and more about getting you in the action, now. Games can turn around in a second, and its fast paced. It’s the NFS of the card games.
They are different, even though they both fall under the CCG genre.
Tarisma
November 11, 2013 at 14:09
Feel the same, I think I’m coming to the end of my GW2 days also, MMO’s were fun for me while they lasted but I cannot commit to the massive time sink that they require. I think I’m going to sit them out from now on.
My Blizzard account was hacked maybe 6 months ago also, not sure what happened haven’t even bothered to sort it out yet, and I think it will remain that way unless project Titan is something AMAZING, like SAO amazing it will stay that way.
