Xbox 360 60GB Officially confirmed

So I was wrong, completely wrong..

I earlier said that I thought the rumours about the 60GB Xbox 360 was just some nonsense made up by a PS3 fanboy as I could see no reason for doing it.

Well it seems like Microsoft sees a reason for doing it and has just officially announced it.

To be honest I think the entire announcement is ridiculous, first they say they are dropping the price of the 20GB in the US by $50, then they say they are bringing out the 60GB at the old price in August…

I just don’t see the point in any of this… unless the HDD itself is one of the main reasons for the bad hardware reliability… but that makes no sense?

I don’t get why this does not make sense to you. It could be due to a variety of costing structures. Even is the price of the unit remains unchanged. Go out and try to buy a 20GB notebook HDD. They are extremely scarce. From a costing point of view MS will definitely want to keep buying components off shelve for the 360. It will make now sense to specially contract a Seagate or a WD to keep on manufacturing 20GB drives solely for the Xbox. Sooner or later that 20GB might end up costing them more than just buying a 120GB off shelf.

60GB is the next step and even that is becoming scarce. Next might be 120GB – 160GB versions.

well… I agree with kabraal, and I assume they are using sata for the harddrives, have you seen a 20 gig 2.5″ sata drive around??? I haven’t.

But also, the 20gig at the $250 means more people can have the nice things from xbox live, so the odd movie etc, but the reason for a 60gig is so more people will think, hmmm, for $50 more, i get the 60gig, and I assume micro will make a small profit off that.

but moving to the 60 gig means that the xbox will compete more with the ps3 is storage. I mean, that was a bit of a selling point for me, that fact that I had 60gig’s of freedom apposed to 20gig’s.

Another point is that microsoft is really pushing for DL content and that means that you can’t really expect someone with 20gig of space to have a lot of dl content, but with 60gig’s thats unleashing a whole world of fun 😛

With the launch of iptv which should be very near, they also need more space, as 13gb is not enough for iptv streaming, movie download and xbl arcade and demos. It would have beenbetter if we could have just used our own USB hdd for all these downloads but not the microsoft way

Yeah I’ve gota ton of portable usb drives lying around, it would be easier for me to slap in my 120 gig SATA drive but nooo. I think I am going to buy a 60 gig and put the 20 gig in my girlfriends xbox, when I get it fixed.

“60GB is the next step and even that is becoming scarce”

That is why it doesn’t make sense… Why not just make the 120GB standard, if we didn’t live in the Microsoft world of HDD costings this wouldn’t add much to the base cost at all.

It just looks like a half hearted attempt to compete with the PS3.

Maybe putting in a 120GB will raise the costs while a 60GB will keep it sorta the same.

How can you see putting a 60GB in as a attempt to compete with sony while you see putting a 120GB in as not trying to compete with sony? Does the number bother you?

Yay more space to download stuff from X-box live… Wait… Why do we need 60gig?

    Nice to have though.
