Xbox 360 DRM tool finally available

Anyone who is on their 2nd (3rd, 4th, 5th…) Xbox 360 console will be really happy to hear that the DRM tool that allows you to transfer all your licenses to your new unit is now available.

You get started by going to xbox.com and then clicking on the link, once in you follow the steps and off you go. Now, I had quite a few arcade games that I wanted to re-license as well as some DLC, so I went through the process before I wrote this article.

The entire process is actually really simple but there are one or two things that left wanting. First was the fact that once you have transfered the licenses over to your new console, you have to go to your download history and tell your machine to “download again” with any of the things you want to transfer. Now while it actually only refreshes the download and doesn’t actually have to download them again, it was quite a pain to go through the process with each item.

The second thing that I saw is that you can only perform this transfer once every 12 months, which means that you had better hope that your Xbox 360 stays good and health for a long time because the truth is, they like to die, a lot.

Personally I’m a bit disappointed. I figure how difficult would it be to just make it a 2 button click on the dashboard? You already have the serial, licensing gamertag and the content. 1 button to say “This is now my xbox, here’s the serial number, here’s my games, I can haz licenses?” 😛
