Let me first say that doobiwan called this ages ago and he was pretty much ignored, maybe we have a genius among us..
Anyway the rumour that the rest of the world is now picking up on is that Microsoft may infact be about to allow third party hardware manufacturers to include Xbox 360 technology in their products…
So what does this mean? Basically think about the technology behind the sim card, virtually every cellphone on the planet uses that technology and offers the base functionality of the SIM, they then add on their extra’s..
So by this time next year we may be able to walk in Makro, pick up a Samsung Blu-Ray player with integrated 360 technology.
Get home plug it in and start playing Halo on it using the Xbox 360 controllers…
One of the biggest complaints about the Xbox 360 is it unreliability, would you pay extra to play Xbox 360 games on a box made by Sony?

I think these rumors go in hand with the rumored “fusion” chip coming in a years time. If you can integrate a GPU and CPU into one chip then sure a 360 set top box is possible.

It may happen, but it will not work that well. The money is in the services and software – I can’t see why anyone else wants to take all of Microsoft’s hardware costs pains for it.
Nintendo tried this with Panasonic. It was a flop. It was also initially how Microsoft wanted to approach the market, but the PC and CE manufacturers did not buy into it.

I’ll pat myself on the back if MS does pull it off. I’ll tell you why I think it’s possible: It’s how MS does everything else. PC for one, and Windows mobile for the other. Control the “platform” not the device. Consoles are a bit different as there has to be hardware standardization.
But look at the hardware strategy: only include the absolute necessary to make great games. That way, in order to create a “360 inside” device all you need are the minimalist chips. If you’re making a “360 inside” PVR, you aren’t forced to include a BR drive, and vice versa. Microsoft have always said it’s about the software and services. Leave the cool hardware up to the hardware guys.
And if you’re wondering, I called it in April 😉

hmmm… thing is where will samsung, toshiba, etc make there money if they sell “360 inside”???
I mean, sure, this is clever, BUT as always Microsoft failed to think about anyone but themselves on this one…
You see, all this means is that the pressure will be on Microsoft to produce these chips.
Just where will the hardware manufactures make there money??? I mean if the new chips cost R x, and the Blu-ray player costs R xy(to make) that means that the player is 2xy for example.
Sony have been clever. and like nintendo, they gonna stick with what works… if both companies have tried and failed at this method then what makes Microsoft think they can pull it off?
