NPD June Sales Stats

NPD released their latest sales stats from the month of June and it wasn’t anything pretty for the Xbox 360.

While the PS3 has outsold it over the past couple of months it has only been by a very small margin, however June changed all of that with the PS3 outselling the 360 in a huge way for the first time.

Obviously everyone instantly points to the release of Metal Gear Solid 4 as the reason for this and I have to agree that is most probably the case. However, FFXIII withstanding, Microsoft needed to make some big announcements and show us all how they are going to stop the big black machine. Microsoft won E3 but it wasn’t much to write home about from anyone’s point of view.

June was a big month for Nintendo as well with the Wii overtaking the 360’s total sales in the US obliterating that 12 month lead in record time.

However it’s not all doom and gloom for Microsoft as it has sold over double the amount of consoles in the US compared to the PS3 and even if the PS3 continues to outsell the 360 2:1 it will take a long time to overhaul it.

With the current 20GB firesale in the US we can expect a good few weeks for the 360 and when the new 80GB PS3 lands in August that will once again push sales.

At the moment this generation is finely balanced and it is looking more likely every week that we are not going to get a clear worldwide second place… I severely doubt anyone is going to overtake the Wii anytime soon.

No a system seller has to move 10 million consoles on one day. Or so they say :p

    Seems to have been….

Though I would agree with Kabraal’s sarcastic comment below and say that 200 000 is not enough to be classed as a real system seller.

You need to be in the millions for that.

iF i read correctly most of the 200000 were the msg4 bundle that contained BC. So it would be in sony interest to have 80 gig with BC. And not the 80 gig without BC they plan to launch later this year.

The way I see it, if a game gets 1000 people to buy a console, its a system seller. the more the merrier.

Urggh that word is such a undefined thing. We don’t know how many people will buy a PS3 for MGS4 during the next 6 months. 200k is a decently significant number imo. I still won’t call it a system seller. General rule of thumb with these sort of things is to wait for Doobiwan’s approval before you jump the gun… 😛

    I feel so honoured! 😉

I would say you could call it a system seller if the sales of the game remain consistently high for a while and the console sales match that trend, the exact numbers are not so important.
