Xbox 360 vs PS3 : Gamespot Round 4

I actually groaned when I saw this headline coming up this morning, while I have always enjoyed Flamebait postings I am just to tired for this one today.

It’s the end of the year and I want to go to bed now… but It’s a biggie and thus cannot be ignored so onto the comparison.

Now the last couple of Eurogamer head to heads have gone the way of the Xbox 360, actually every single one has gone the way of the 360 but lets not get picky. The latest option of rabid PS3 fans has been simply to pull the fanboy card and build up the case for a conspiracy against the PS3.

No cookies for guessing who won this comparison

First up Fallout 3 and the 360 takes this one with better draw distance and textures.

Next up we get Soul Calibur IV and this time it’s a tie with the 360 version having more ‘stuff’ on the screen while the PS3 has better “anisotropic filtering” (say what?)

Then we get Dead Space where the 360 easily walks away with the title thanks to some bizarre banding on the PS3 version.

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is up next and once again the 360 is the better version graphically thanks to higher detail textures and better lighting.

And then we have Call of Duty: World at War which Gamespot feels is a tie as the PS3 has better lighting contrast but the 360 once again has that anti-aliasing advantage.

Finally we get Mortal Kombat vs DC which is a clear winner for the 360 even though it really shouldn’t be pushing either box to hard.

Oh I nearly forgot Madden 09 which was a complete tie.

So that’s it, another cross platform comparison and another win for the 360. Now the thing that gets me about this is that people won’t believe it. Someone is going to call me or Gamespot an Xbot (why me when I am just reporting on it still bewilders me), the other option is that people are going to say cross platform games don’t matter and the PS3 is better purely because of Uncharted Drakes Fortune or MGS4.

I can understand people not caring as the differences are really minor and do not in anyway detract from the enjoyment of the game, but to refuse to admit it is odd.

Anyway that’s it, you can view the screenshots overlayed through the Gamespot link below and I recommend doing that and taking a look at the Call of Duty 5 screenshots as they seemed to think the PS3 version was equal to the 360 and from those screenshots I would personally disagree.

Not odd. As a developer or publisher it would cost me too much to get the ps3 version as good as the 360 version. If it’s 99% as good looking, why bother? Especially if it’s a franchise that i know will sell anyway. I know this is ‘ea speak’ but it really is a cost vs profit debate and the ps3 is still more expensive to develop for. I think this will change in the next gen as the ps4 will probably use a similar architecture and there will be better dev tools.

you hit the nail on the head, the difference are minor and anybody cheering or jeering are just nit picking.
game play should be the important factor when reviewing games, eye candy is secondary

Games consoles need to have a killer gpu not cpu , maybe next time Sony will realize that.

I believe it. I just don’t believe that this makes the xbox physically more powerful than the PS3 which is the general conclusion from these articles. And to be honest, I don’t think the PS3 is more powerful than the 360. Like miles said, it’s more of a software limitation than a hardware one. Software can be fixed. Hardware… not so nice to fix.

Still I find it odd that people go out of their way to make a big ruckus of nothing. What with Intel Core i7, 12GB memory and tri channel SLI nvidia 280GTX’s out there, we are really starting to enter the “what looks better, donkey kong or digger” era.

some people actually work for a living and have the right to make this statement, you on the other hand…

Paying 20-30% more for a game that looks the same on a cheaper console cannot be overlooked.

Is it not odd the high number of broken 360’s this time of year locally 😕

    Mine went E74 last Friday.
Luckily it took MI Digital only 2 days to get me a new one, so no worries.

I think the big point is getting the same gaming quality, but the difference comes in at console prices, so how much is a blue ray player worth to you then???

i agree but paying 20-30% for the more expensice console with free local online gaming can get tempting seeing that our manufacturer dont give a crap about our needs

He, on the other hand, works a seperate full time job and then still runs the site at the same time.

So, I reckon that he has more right to say it than most people.

I had to wait a month for my swap out as MiDigital had no stock. Received the swap out unit last Monday… then had an sorry incident and an E76 error. MiDigital swapped it out immediatly on Tuesday.

Can’t we complain at the retailer for a new one if
the retailer has stock but MiDigital doesn’t? 🙁

I very much disagree with the Dead Space comparison. I’ve seen both versions running on the same LCD, and the PS3 version is vastly superior. Not disputing the others mind.
