You may remember that we posted up a story last week about the awesome special that Walmart were having on the Xbox 360. Where you could get a Xbox 360 for $199 which then came bundled with a $100 Walmart gift card.
Effectively ensuring that you could pick up a Xbox 360 Arcade for a mere $99.
Well this deal was pounced upon in a big way with estimates that Walmart sold around 90 000 units on that day alone. Oddly enough NPD doesn’t count Walmart sales so don’t expect to see a major victory when the NPD stats are released.
Walmart has also announced that they are extending the deal until the 15th of November which means that you, if you lived in America, could get a Xbox 360 and Modernwarfare 2 and a spare controller for $199.
That’s a helluva deal, could you imagine being able to buy a Xbox 360 for R733?

… wait. Why don’t NPD count the sales? Surely a sale is a sale?

NPD don’t receive sales data from walmart – it does not mean they don’t estimate the sales that they make though. Its not feasible to count every single sale – so they take a statistical sample and extrapolate the data based on that sample to come up with an accurate estimate.
In this case it will affect NPD’s accuracy as they no longer have a sample that is representative of the US sales demographic
