Xbox in the clouds

Microsoft has told us about the cloud, and they’ve told us about the Kinect, but apparently we just don’t see why they’re so awesome. Now, we get a new video spelling it out for us – and to be honest, I think it’s pretty cool. Kinect may still be creepy, but at least it’s not ONLY creepy.

The new video, titled “Xbox One is built for the Future”, starts by explaining the cloud system. As Albert Panello, Director of Product Planning, states:

Any Xbox One in the world is your Xbox.

While he’s not inciting shoplifting or stealing, Panello does have a point. Log in (through the power of the cloud) to any Xbox One, and you will have all your save data, achievements and page settings. Honestly, it’s what we’ve come to expect thanks to Google. Still, a real nice thing to have. They seem to gloss over the idea of dedicated servers; I would love to know if we will also be getting local ones.

Graeme Boyd and Panello go on to discuss the Kinect. Panello assures viewers that the console will still work without the Kinect. You can play games and watch as much TV as you like without the peripheral. However, by using the Kinect, you can pass your controller to your friend and it will know that there is a different person playing, and link that gameplay to their Xbox profile. Guess that means people will have to find a different way to cheat on their achievements. Also, you can go all futuristic on the Xbox One – telling it to record you.

Check out the video here:

Convinced yet? I like what I’m seeing about the Xbox One – Microsoft seems to be trying hard to overcome their previous PR disasters – but do you guys trust them again? Did you ever?

After the 7th gen I will never trust any of the big 3 ever again.

I think a PC is the best bet considering that the term Console died with the PS2.

LOOOOOK ITS FUCKING MILO. IT CAN DO EVERYTHING!!!!! LIES

THE CLOUD IS A LIE. WHO OWNS THE CLOUD? WHO GAINS FROM IT? WHO HAS ACCESS TO YOUR INFORMATION.

The future is becoming a massive DATA FARM thanks to the Lemming collective. The kids of today will never know the term OWNERSHIP like we did. It is all a service plans. CARS WITH NO WHEELS.

Sure the Governments have access to it, well the FBI for sure! Sure any of the guys maintaining the cloud servers can access live stream to any households kinect. Take still images or video put them on a flash drive. Sure the amount of stuff they have already is mind blowing.. That Valium comes in handy I’m sure!

Clouds will just get bigger every year! With the rate technology is moving at in 20 years this world might resemble the one in movie Looper or close. Sure adverts will pop up and change like in the movies we seen, change accordingly to meet what we have watched or played as it is all on the cloud servers. ID, Tel, Postal address, Residence… ect This is all just the start, I am afraid…

The tech is great. What they want to achieve is great.

But they forget that most of the world can’t use these features to their fullest yet.

Now getting in to the race early and cementing your own little position before everyone else is a fantastic idea and shows some very forward, rational thinking. The problem is that they are trying to make it a necessity RIGHT NOW which, let’s be honest, the world is not ready for yet.

All of this should be added value. Not a requirement to use the Xbox.

That was my argument from when all this XBox stuff started. It looks like they are starting to catch the drift and realize that these features are far more value by being given as choice instead of requirements to use the product. They may actually pull this off and win the console race.
    Maybe.

    We shall see

So with the IR blaster I can actually also control my TV & HiFi with voice and Project Spark is also going to be free to play by Silver Xbox Live users? Cool! MS is releasing a bunch of informative videos this week (2 a day I think) while PS is still debating whether the RLOD is real or not! ????

I don’t know about this controlling things with voice, I have a iPhone 5 and Siri don’t understand my English all that well…. I also have a Samsung TV that can be controlled with voice and gestures, I use the remote….I get why some would like to control things with voice commands, I am unfortunately not one of them. Maybe in 10 years time when it can understand my Afrikaans accent I might try it again, till then I will do all the hard work to point the remote at the TV and press the button…

HMMMM “cloud processing is a idea that they can start offloading some off the compute on to the cloud”
The xbox one doesn’t have the same power as the PS4 and there cloud gaming hasn’t been proven yet , I will wait and see if the xbox lives up to the hype , for now the PS4 is a day one purchase but the xbox and steambox will be competing for the second home console spot.

The cloud could help in the future, but the catch is, you need a very fast and very stable internet connection. In most countries that is no achieved or even close to being achieved.

thats it, with all the spying allegations already in the US do you expect me to believe that that MS will not give access of this feature to nosy government organisations?
Not only that, do you expect me to believe that they wont sell this information to other companies for marketing and sales purposes?
Thanks but ill stick to the console that plays games, which is why i bought the console, to play games, not to sit there like a slob speaking all my commands to a creepy box.

My console will play the best versions of games, have the best exclusives and give the best overall experience as a gamer.

I still highly doubt 80% of the things discussed in this video will be available in South Africa.

We still have no local voice support for kinect. We have no local servers. We have get 40% of XBL content. Why would MS suddenly care? Yea the cloud is great but so is having a spots car but with no petrol or roads to drive it on it’s just nice to talk about.

Without decent internet speeds or online access for that matter the cloud serves no benefit. Local servers would certainly solve the speed problem. I just can’t see Microsoft making the investment here, we will likely have to connect to UK/US servers.
