If you’re an Xbox 360 owner and were planning on muscling in on some multiplayer action on next week’s public holiday, I’m afraid I have some bad news for you.

That’s right folks – Microsoft have scheduled maintenance and upgrades to Xbox Live’s infrastructure on the very day that we don’t actually have to be at work.

According to Microsoft’s Major Nelson, “This service maintenance is to prepare for some of the recently announced features that will be available later this year”. Presumably he means the newly announced services like  Facebook, Twitter and Last.fm et al. Please note though that this downtime is only to prepare the service for those new features – so you’ll notice no changes to the system when it does come back online.

The service will be down from 9:01 AM South African time, and could be down for 24 hours. Thanks a bunch, Microsoft.

Of course, if the weather next week is anything like it is now, It would be an opportune time to hibernate for a bit.
