Xbox One officially clocked up

We told you that rumor had it the Xbox One would be up clocked.  Well, it is rumor no longer as chief product officer, Marc Whitten, has confirmed that the Xbox GPU clock has been boosted.  Let’s clock and load!

In an interview on Major Nelson’s podcast, Whitten explained that Microsoft has been “tweaking the knobs” on the Xbox One to get more performance.  Not a mental image I needed.  However, there are some cool results:

“An example that’s actually been really good news for us … is we’ve tweaked up our clock speed on the GPU from 800 MHz to 853 MHz.”

That’s another 53 MHz.  Hoorah!  Is this gonna sway people to get it?  Probably not, but it’s nice to see them tinkering with design before launch.  This should be that we get a console that’s as good as it can be at launch, without leaving much room for modders to mess around and over-clock.  What am I saying?  Of course people will play with it!

53mhz is a lot in GPU terms.

It is, enough to crash a GPU if not managed correctly. Even 20mhz can start to destabilise one.

I think this is why MS went in and customized the GPU and CPU so they can tweak it without crashing the system.

I run mine 50-100 on the GPU and 200-250 on the GPU memory. Stable for most games, one or two games does not like overclocking so I then slack down to the lower values.

I’m sure there won’t be any overheating issues at launch due to this change.

Not at all, taking the size of the console into account, that whole thing was designed with cooling in mind! Should the PS4 try something similar though, that’d be a real clusterfcuk!

Eh, I’m curious to see what fan (and heatsink, specifically) they have on the CPU/GPU. You can stick a 500mm fan in your case, but if you’ve got a stock CPU cooler, you’re asking for trouble.

Can’t find it now but I read an article earlier the week where they went out of their way to explain the cooling properties(maybe in anticipation of this concern) and they mentioned that they have “pretty descent” heat sinks in place. Will have to wait until they reveal running temps though, but I’m sure MS would not even have considered this if it may lead to another RROD! ????

I wonder how noisy it’ll be – extra cooling usually means extra noise.

So does this make the rumor that the ESRAM in the XBox One will make the GPU faster than the GDDR5 Ram in the PS4?

So, at 853, it’s way faster than most PCs out there?

Overclocking??Seriously?? Next gen isn’t going to be all it’s hyped up to be if they need to tweak by 53 Mhz…Probably be outdated in about 2yrs and will be holding up PC progression in order for Sony and MS to get the most they can out of these machines…

Jeez MS, really impressive and with the size of the Xbox One they wont have a problem keeping the temperature down! My only concern with all this good news from MS since E3 is what will they have left at Gamescom? The return of Family Sharing maybe?? ????Sooo happy, must get my paws on the One as soon as possible!!!

I love how everyone talks about this stuff and know shit about what it means. And no, reading some DigitalFoundry article doesn’t entitle you at all.
