Xbox One gameplay capture resolution revealed

Not the revolution

Next-gen consoles are going to be pricier than getting your stomach pumped after eating McDonalds, that’s for sure. So how much bang are you getting for your buck then? One aspect that I’m digging, is the self-publishing of videos from gameplay, something that both the Xbox One and Playstation 4 will have. And with the Xbox One, those videos will be in HD.

Taking part in an AMA on IGN, Microsoft’s system architect Marc Whitten revealed that the console can capture your short clips in 720p at 30 frames per second.

“Game DVR captures beautiful clips at 720p 30fps. The first thing you’ll see with our game DVR is the integration of our Upload service on the console. This service allows you to manage, edit, and share your content,” Whitten said.

Your clips are stored in the cloud. Also, you’ll see games making “magic moment” videos of your gameplay based on the game DVR functionality – all seamlessly integrated. You’ll be able to see these clips in the Xbox One Guide, in your own game DVR collection, and when you are looking at gamercards on the system.

You’ll also see games take advantage of this platform capability and do interesting things to integrate captured game footage into the game experience itself.

The new Xbox One gamerpics on the other hand though, will be a step up in terms of resolution, clocking in at 1080p pictures according to Whitten. “Your avatar will be on the system at launch and in fact, you’ll have some new options, including the ability to do full-body HD gamerpics,” Whitten said.

We’ve moved from the 64×64 gamerpics on Xbox 360 to a full 1080p. They are beautiful, and you are going to see some really cool hero moments, like when you login to see personalized views of your games and other content.

Not bad, resolution-wise, not bad at all. It’s still a bit on the short side, totalling five minutes of gameplay in comparison to the 15 minutes that the Playstation 4 can capture, but I do like the editing options that I;ve seen so far for the Xbox One.

And the thing is, we want to do Lets Play videos. In fact, we want to know what you guys would like to see in such content? First hour playthroughs? Walkthroughs? Me failing yet again to beat Terramorphous the Invincible in Borderlands 2?

Let us know below, yo.

  1. I doubt actual Let’s players will use this, the qaulity of these let’s plays won’t be able to compare to youtube , 5 or even 15 mins is too little

    I got bored of Let’s Plays…

Money hungry letsplayers will use both. More videos, more chance to get multiple views. 5 minutes is good for achievement guides or trophy guides, while 15 minutes… I don’t know, maybe collectibles or something like that. Any worthy letsplayer had 30-60 minutes videos.

But I don’t really care about this.

Great for achievements and hero moments! This is stored directly on the cloud yes? So no constant HDD wear and tear? Luckily Xbox One also fully support external video capturing for the walkthroughs etc. ????

Nobody actually making a series is going to use these editors, this stuff is more just show off your awesome moments or funny moments. Would prefer to see video reviews and the likes instead of lets play.

Not a lot of people manage to get the lets play thing right imo, but when people do it’s good.

If Sony announces 1080p 60fps recording wouldn’t that mean that the recording of gameplay would need to upscale the actual output??

You’d better hope they don’t announce 1080p 60 FPS recording.
