Xbox One Halo:The Master Chief Collection pre-downloads could be broken

Master chief

The beauty of the latest console generation is that we’re now at a point where we can pre-load games in anticipation of new releases, saving everyone from the hassle of having to buy and then wait on launch day. That’s a neat idea, and one that will make the adoption of digital purchases that much simpler and convenient. If it works that is.

Because right now, the Xbox One is having some trouble with one of its biggest games of the year. Halo: The Master Chief Collection seem to be suffering from some sort of download bug, as pre-loading the game is turning out to be a nightmare.

Let’s take a look at Halo: The Master Chief Collection then. I’m supposed to be reviewing the game, and was kindly given an early access code so that I could do just that. The game itself clocks in at 45gb in size, due to it being a four games in one remastered deal, with a 20gb patch on the way for launch day. Fair enough, so downloading might take me a few days, but at least I can start playing once I’ve installed enough of it. Winner winner, chicken dinner.

Except that after a week of downloading, I’m still stuck at the 4% mark, as pausing/turning my console off results in constant resets:

Halo

Now for the sake of clarity, I am on a 2mb line. An unshaped line, wherein I download from between 10PMish until 6AM the following morning, to be precise. Here’s a look at my data logs from last night alone:

Halo

This morning, my download was sitting on 12% when I woke up. Now because I’m on a capped account, I regularly pause and resume downloads. Doing that again, resulted in Halo:TMCC being set back to 4%. This is a problem that I’ve had the entire week so far. And I’m not the only one, as the Halo Waypoint and IGN forums are also filled with folks who are also experiencing constant resets.

I’m not the only one locally having some trouble as Pennyworth Review’s Nick De Bruyne is also struggling:

Now to be fair, this isn’t happening to everyone. Most folks are able to download the entire game without hassles. But this problem is popping up frequently. According to Microsoft support, clearing your persistent storage (five times for optimal effect), clearing your alternate MAC and doing a hard power cycle reset on your router should resolve the issue. I’ll be trying yet again tonight, and hopefully this method will work so that I can update the post.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection isn’t the only game experiencing issues however. Call Of Duty: Advanced Warfare is also having some download problems, as some gamers have unfortunately found out:

As I said, hopefully, this solution from Microsoft support works. Because I am dying to throw a plasma grenade in all the HDier pixels onto the faces of several locals who I game with regularly.

  1. Also had this on other games, luckily every time it just jumped back to the right percentage after a while.

That’s not too bad. It’ll take the night to download but that would have been a nice option to pre download patches before hand

You can pre-download the patch if you buy the game digitally. You’ll be able to play on launch day.

Almost happened to me as well. Was at about 90%, power went off. Turned PC on again and it wanted to download from scratch, also it said that my SSD was full. After looking on the drive what do I see? All the files, so I simply made more space on the SSD for it to think it needs to download from scratch, soon afterwards it picked up that almost al the files are there and it continued.

Our Halo download kept resetting after restarting as well. We just left the console on overnight and it finally finished after breakfast.

capped doesnt get throttled though, so its technically faster.
and the price difference between a capped bundle with 180gb and uncapped is negligable.

Best internet setup is to go with a capped account and then swap over to a IS uncapped account after hours.

most capped accounts nowadays split their bundles into anytime and midnight – 6am, so isnt paying for another uncapped account for your evening downloads/uploads a bit redundant?

There are uncapped accounts that run max speed totally unshaped between 5am-8pm the next day and all weekend long, heavily during 8am-5pm though so you’ll need a capped account for those periods.

You need to *hint* and suggest to Gavin that you need high speed fast internet to do your work. Or start spending all that money you get from the publishers for good game reviews.

I asked for budget for a 10mb line and was instead giving access to an account that was capped to 10mb of data.

This is what I love about Steam. It’s so chilled when it comes to downloads. What’s that? You lost connection? Cool man, we’ll just download it later and pick up where we left off, go play some games offline in the meanwhile.

So Microsoft can’t be bothered to send disc based review copies to reviewers.

Retail video games needs to shut down and video games should only be made available through Stream, Origin, Uplay, Xbox Live and PSN. And if you don’t have a 50mb line the option to buy games should not be made available to you.

My CoD:AW download seemed broken because I was network / wifi jumping depending on the time of day / after hours. It seemed stuck on 7% and then 18% and then 25%. It would jump back to one of those 3 whenever it was interrupted (back to 7% before reaching 18%, back to 18% before reaching 25%)

I cleared the Cache and Alternate MAC, power cycled, changed from WiFi to Wired, changed NAT from open to strict, forwarded ports, used the DMZ, used a new alternate MAC, tried with and without interruptions… no joy.

I used up a 100GB capped Afrihost account and a few GB’s on an MWEB uncapped account, but decided not to let my rolling cap (don’t you just love that?) be destroyed for nothing.

Alas, over 100GB downloaded and no game. I don’t know where it went, and gave up on caring. This has been a severe setback to my faith in the DRM and digital pre-loading system, and that’s a shame.

Luckily my wife (<3) did not take the plunge to digital and will get a hard copy, so I have somewhere to get the game from.

I would love if there was a reply other than the generic support reply. This is a new thing on a new gen console (for us), so I wrote my experience off as a teething issue. Seeing this pop up in another favourite makes me wonder though…

Downloaded fine here, but had the same problem with another game a little while ago. This problem has popped up since the last 2 preview dash builds, same thing with external hard drive disconnects. I’m sure MS is looking into it.
