Xbox One has improved in its first year

Potential

Both the PS4 and Xbox One have been out for about a year now internationally. Locally, we are only just getting our hands on the Xbox One now, but it’s a far improved console from launch. Major Nelson posted all the ways the Xbox One has changed in the past year, but I still have a niggling question.

Over on Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb’s blog, we get the full list of hundreds of features brought to Xbox One in the first year. These include a new achievements app, custom backgrounds and battery power indicators. TV was made more social, a new media player even includes DLNA support and even the updating and downloads systems were improved. With monthly updates, the console really is showing off some excellent features and is finally aligning with that “next generation console” promise.

However, I’m seriously curious about some of the functionality that was missing originally at launch. Why did DLNA support, or the ability to pause downloads, or even battery power indicators all have to be patched into the system after launch? Surely something as simple as knowing how much juice is left in your controller should have been an obvious consideration when the console was developed. Also, why is it possible to share videos through Xbox One but not screenshots?

Both consoles have made promises about capacity that have yet to be fulfilled. My PS3 is still permanently plugged into the TV simply because it is the best media center – the PS4 doesn’t even come close yet. By the time the Xbox One shipped in South Africa, we already had a ton of excellent new features, and now that PlayStation has fixed their latest patch, that system is also improved. They are fantastic tech and I don’t really like playing games on the older consoles anymore. They just aren’t what we were promised originally, and I wonder how long it will take before they can really deliver on the new generation experience that we were promised.

Then again, Xbox had a lot of fixing to do after initially promising an always online console. Fixing that mistake must have taken a ton of resources that would otherwise have gone towards battery indicators. It’s become an excellent console, even if it took a year of updates to get there.

Why would you need a battery indicator if it was supposed to be powered by always-online clouds?

The problem both Sony and MS were faced with at launch is AMD left them to build their own mono-driver for the system and programming for an CPGPU system isn’t as straight forward as your traditional PC architecture. DLNA and MKV support on the other hand would require some sort of royalty to be paid to the rights holder and when you are selling that many consoles, the cost can be exponential.

The Xbox One surpasses the PS3 as the best media-center and mind you, the PS3 can’t do MKV and some MP4 files natively and the YouTube app is horrendous. it’s more than just a console, more than just a media player.

A year of updates to get there” Is that because of the obligatory massive day one patch you have to DL?

“far improved console from launch” lol I hope so.

If the Old people who run the gaming division at Microsoft even bothered reading a single comment on a gaming site I bet you all a Muffin that their product will still be large and in charge.

The snowball of hate started rolling when that dude told us to STFU and deal with ON-LINE DRM before the launch.

A pity Microsoft Studios had to close down as a result.

So many lies. Little wonder the brand lost loyalty. As for the MANDATORY Kinect 2 that is required to run the X Bone CPU and cannot be removed with flip of a switch.

I do not know my arse from my elbow even when hooking up VGA cables let alone how to turn a PC on. I would probably end up buying a TITAN card to run Tetris.

And somehow despite an extra year to prepare for launch in SA, the Xbox One wasn’t even properly localized at launch here with no TV channel integration and what not.

Yeah well channel integration is not really MS fault, Multichoice is being asses about it as they do not want to hand out their EPG to MS as it’s an “enabler” for their decoders.

Yeah Multichoice are to blame for that one. But at least I’ve heard that DSTV Catchup and Boxoffice apps are being made for Xbox One so we’ll get some form of DSTV soon

I got my Xbox One imported and I’ve had it basically since initial launch. While the monthly updates are awesome and do add extras, I don’t understand what the big fuss is all about? I don’t even use 90% of the features that have been added after launch. I get home put my Xbox on and play games, that’s what I bought the console for in the first place, all other features are an after thought.

I play games, the wife watches Youtube training videos, we rip our BBC DVD’s (Doc Who, Doc Martin, that sort) to the home PC and watch via Xbox 360. We play to use Xbox One like that too.

Now, if the local supplier would just agree with MS website about the Assasins Creed bundle being available, then I would have one already.

Well in terms of ripping your DVDs to your PC and playing them through Xbox One, that will definitely work.

Unfortunately MicrosoftSA is completely and utterly useless so I’m not even sure if we’ll even be able to get that bundle here. But there are a few other bundles available at the moment, why not have a look at those?

But I might just do that. Fifa 15, hmm, will be fun for a while, but, meh.

Black Flag was good but had it’s issues. Not my favourite of all the Assassins Creeds. Can’t wait for Unity though.

Sony World Wide Studios have launched Multiple PS4 games.

Driveclub is a good video game. It got 41 75+ reviews on metacritic.

Both PSN and Xbox Live have similar amounts of unscheduled downtime or issues with friends lists, etc. PSN has been running fine through Destiny and CoD launches.

PSN is running fine aside from a few hours of unscheduled downtime a month. That’s unacceptable and unfortunate and Sony needs to improve, but some people blow it out of proportion.

PS+ subs doubled in September with the Destiny launch. Sony is upgrading servers to handle the increased load.

Driveclub’s issues have nothing to do with PSN. Driveclub online is mostly fixed as of Oct 28. Multiplayer races, clubs, leaderboards, etc. are working.

Stop spreading fanboy lies, ignorance, trolling, and blind hate. All of your lies and blind hatred only make you look deranged and sick to normal, sane people. You are sick and need help.
