We’re in a generation now where getting the most out of your console now necessitates having a persistent online connection. Marketplaces, free games and DLC can all be grabbed at the drop of a hat, but even the hardware itself is constantly changing. The Xbox One is such a console, as you can expect a monthly update from next year for that platform.
Next month’s update was cited to be smaller than previous console patches, and it looks like those plans haven’t changed at all according to Xboss Phil Spencer. “We usually don’t do big updates in December,” Spencer said on the Major Nelson podcast.
December I expect to be a time that we’re just going to make sure people are turning on consoles and the games are playing well and everything’s working great. That’s job number one for us.
As we roll into 2015 we definitely have a road map for monthly updates. When they’ll start up again we’ll watch. We’re kind of working through the schedules on those things now but it’s a commitment that we have as a platform team that we’ll continue monthly updates.
The last patch was released in mid-October for the Xbox One, with the focus being on multi-tasking fixes and keeping things social with the Snap and Friends functions getting a tweak or two. The upcoming November update will be more substantive, giving gamers custom backgrounds, more Twitter integration, a revamped store interface and updates for Smartglass and Internet Explorer.
Personally, I’m hoping that a January update will see the general user interface re-designed, because that’s one digital side of the Xbox One that isn’t winning my heart right now.

Dr. Allison Reed: What are you gonna do?
Dr. Paulson: We might have to amputate.
Harry Block: Whoa, Doc! Don’t take the leg! Ira, don’t let them take my leg.
Ira Kane: Isn’t there anything else you can do? He thinks he’s an athlete.
Nurse Tate: Doctor, look!
Dr. Paulson: It’s headed for his testicles.
Harry Block: Take it! Take it! Take the leg!

LOL, love the marketing speak.
Big ass, desperate software and firmware workarounds for hardware design faults and shipping without all the features implemented now becomes features. “Monthly hardware updates” nogal.
All the updates and sacrificing p’s for f’s and f’s for p’s confirms it. PS4 and Xbox One is generation 7 and a half.

Some workaround for design or manufacturing fault will always be needed but fixes every month or every second month one year after product launch smacks of desperation and one thing I’ve learned over the years the only thing you get with a lot of knee-jerk desperate fixes is a bunch of bricked units and unhappy customers.

So that’s why the PS4 is outselling the XBOX One. Most people are replacing their broken consoles.

RROD, nothing more to say about bricking a console (at least with the SONY you can fix it). And no, no one flagged you this time (at least I haven’t received an email, yet).

November 4, 2014 at 11:10
Oh well, Sony just put aside $1.2bn to the dustbin this quarter like very other quarter before http://www.cnet.com/news/sony-posts-1-2-billion-loss-as-mobile-business-falls-off-a-cliff/
RinceThis
November 4, 2014 at 11:18
I’d rather dispense with $1.2 billion than MS’s mistake of spending $7.2 billion buying Nokia. I’m looking at console sales, not mobile mate.

I somehow don’t think Sony care that much about making profit on their consoles or mobiles. They make most of their money from life insurance and finance.

YLOD, nothing more to say about bricking a console (at least with MS they just swopped it out)

November 4, 2014 at 11:21
It was a massive fail, don’t try defend it, even they admitted their mistake.
Pieter Kruger

So did Sony with the YLOD not? Oh wait, no it was probably “not their fault” once again, that justified them not swopping out…..

November 4, 2014 at 11:41
Back in 2007 the 360 had a failure rate of a WHOPPING 32%! The highest any console ever made has. Some figures go as far as saying it was hitting 60% in some places. The PS3 between 2% and 9% which is a little higher than what manufactures expect their products to break at given factory mishaps. That is a huge difference man. Anyway, gone over this a million times with other fanboys and same circus. Later.
FoxOneZA
November 4, 2014 at 11:27
Instead YLOD was turned into a profiteering scheme. R2800 per swap-out for an out of warranty console and the broken consoles were sold off as refurbished items. You gotta love the desperation of a sinking ship.
