Xbox Scarlett – Speed, enhanced frame rates and more power are the end goals

If video game consoles were guns, then the PlayStation 4 would easily be a sniper rifle: Powerful, precise and built to deliver a specific payload at maximum speed. What would the Xbox One X be then? The nuclear bomb that you’d drop on that sniper because there’s no kill like overkill. Microsoft’s heavyweight console refresh introduced a titan of a machine to the gaming scene not too long ago, a bruiser that delivers the best graphics in the console gaming space currently.

While games are about more than just the number of polygons you can squeeze into each frame, it certainly doesn’t hurt the Xbox One X marketing division to proudly proclaim that theirs is the most powerful console ever built. A boast that Microsoft aims to secure in the next generation with Project Scarlett. The goal is simple for Xbox: Make a console, make it brilliant and give it UNLIMITED POWER. Or at least enough raw power and grunt to put it far ahead of the competition on a hardware level.

“The team that built Xbox One X is building Project Scarlett,” Microsoft’s GM of games marketing Aaron Greenberg said via VG247.

I think we’re really proud of the fact that we built the world’s most powerful console. We want to continue to not only focus on power, but also add things like speed, enhanced frame rates with a more powerful CPU, and we want to give those capabilities to our game developers.

We’re meeting with game developers, we’re going and meeting with them, actually, right now, and they have dev kits. We’ll hear more from them in time, but we know, so far, the feedback initially is they’ve been really excited about our plans, and we’ll share more – I mean, next year is really, for us, is going to be all about Project Scarlett.

Much like Shakira’s hips, the numbers don’t lie for Project Scarlett: a 120fps refresh rate, 8K resolution games and a whole bunch of other technical mumbo jumbo that I just don’t understand but still makes me salivates with unbridled technolust. 2020 is going to be an interesting year for the next console generation to kick off in.

  1. As long as all Xbox exclusive games hit the PC, I just don’t see a reason to get one.

Glob I don’t think I have the power to go though this again for another 5 years.

Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it. If only Shakira’s hips had announced the Xbone instead of Don Mattrick’s jacket.

8k games at 120fps? I don’t believe that’s going to happen. 8k capabilities probably means video playback. Maybe some form of upscaling to 8k. But definitely not 8k gaming.

I have a massive issue with the way Microsoft run their advertising.

I watched the video on VG247 and I hate the way that MS try to sound relevant and ahead of the curve when they aren’t. I just wish they’d advertise what the capabilities are.

What do I mean. Well from the video at about 1:48 they talk about ray-tracing. “It’s real time, because it’s hardware accelerated, for the first time ever”

NO! Microsoft! Stop! Stop with the overexageration! First time on console? Yes. But nVidia are already doing this. Say first time on console. But don’t try and sell your stuff to those who are less tech savvy by giving false impressions. To the parents and younger kids who don’t follow all the gobildy gook tech stuff who now think this device does something NOTHING else does.

Don’t try and tell people that the thing can do 8k @120FPS when we all know that’s false. Will there be some content there? Sure I think so. Small instances but mostly it will be upscaling tech. Will that tech be good? YES! I am sure!

So punt that! “We can offer clearer images than ever before. Upscaling your games to 8K television capabilities so that you do not see as much blur and have a crisper image”

That sounds far more appealing to me than just “8k @120FPS” because I know that, that is not possible.

Just sell it right. Stop selling half truths MS!

    GAH!

That right there is the only reason why MS even sells any consoles. Lies and deception that is rewarded by thunderous applause.

To be fair, they genuinely do have the most powerful console of this generation in the Xbox One X.

And also to be fair, all of this is just marketing. This is how almost all marketing works. It’s marketing 101. Spin it so it sounds better than it is…

Except no other industry would be allowed to get away with this.

Imagine nVidia or AMD come along and say their brand spanking new card can push 8K @ 120FPS in games.

Then they can’t hit any of those targets unless they are on 1920×1080 and they are using image sharpening to make the game “appear” 8K.

They’d be hit with false advertising.

MS does have the most powerful console and it’s a piece of insane tech.
But what they don’t have have is:
          a) The first ever hardware to hardware accelerate Ray Tracing in Real time like they claim
          b) a unit that can do 8k gaming at 120FPS.

Marketing is fine. But market it right.
Specify that you can upscale graphics to appear good on an 8K display panel and be almost indistinguishable from what an actual 8K image would be
Specify that it’s the first console to do hardware ray tracing.

Don’t imply things that are false and then hide behind “Well, we never ACTUALLY said the stuff we said, people just misunderstood us”

They are being vague on purpose to sell a product to less informed people by making it appear to be more than it actually is.

          That is my gripe.

The hardware itself? It’s fantastic and people really should probably start saving for this. It’s exciting! Consoles that can do raytracing? And can still let your games look good on your 8k TV without blurring the image!? WOW! Legitimately that’s impressive. But don’t lie or be vague and obtuse about your product. Sell it for what it is

I think you need to realise that those boundaries are written in South African law – not international law. Internationally, many many companies advertise like this, with half-truths. It’s the norm. This isn’t an exception. The marketing team are just doing their job.

Sure, be angry about it that’s fine. But remember – when they say they’re the first, they’re not technically lying. In the console space, they are the first. And they’ll just say yeah but that’s implied. Which, if you think about it, with the context of the new generation of CONSOLES being the topic of discussion, it is implied.

Is it strictly accurate? No. But they’re not lying either.

            Agreed. It’s still wrong.

Also, nVidia. 3.5GB cards. Massive outrage. Refunds. The whole shebang.

MS. 4k @ 60FPS. Doesn’t actually achieve this at launch. People are a little annoyed. No refunds no nothing. Solution? Launch a stronger version you have to buy.

It’s just to me morally corrupt and I don’t agree with the fact that there’s one set of rules applied one way, yet different the other.

They’re supposed to be strictly accurate though, there’s quite a bit in here in how they’re supposed to behave and communicate:

            https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/legal/compliance/default.aspx

Not technically lying or omitting pertinent information that works against customers making an informed choice as part of “marketing” is expressly against their own codes of conduct, and they’re supposed to respect the laws of the countries in which they operate.

As long as it can do 60fps in 4K, that should be enough for most. 4K TVs are becoming more financially viable, so I expect there to be a lot more 4K screens when the console is released!

Even 4k @ 60 FPS is going to be tough depending on your definition of what you mean by 4k. With upscaling… Yeah I reckon this could do it sure.

Actual 4K ? Where each pixel is rendered? Nope. Even the best PC’s today still battle with that.

BUT as long as it looks 4k, then hey why not? I’m all for upscaling actually. I’m super pleased to see that nVidia with Turing can now do that same kind of GPU based upscaling. It’s going to save folk a lot of money.
