XCOM: Declassified: how battles work

Darryn went hands on with the upcoming XCOM: Declassified a while back and in general he had positive feelings about the title but as always we are all a little wary of how they are going to transform this cult title.

Well now they’ve released a video showcasing how the in game battles work and it has cleared nothing up. In fact I’m more confused than ever now whether this is a third person shooter or a turn based strategy game.

Which means this could be way too complicated to enjoy or they are going to break new ground and merge two distinctly different genres.

Personally I’m rooting for the latter as I always want to see new ideas rewarded.

You know what, I’m LOOOOOVING the XCOM I’m currently addicted to (EU), and I love turn based games. The way things are in my life I cannot always give 100% focus to something, and turn based really is perfect for me currently.

If you have not played XCOM EU, get your ass over there to jam it NOW!

          Met eish ja lol.

I stopped playing it when Borderlands 2 came out, finally started again yesterday because after watching the cricket for 30 minutes I thought I needed some more punishment. I’ve forgotten everything. Now a Chimera is kicking my ass around the park :/

From the video I say real-time pause and play strategy game (like they had in Xcom: Apocolypse) but out of a first and third person perspective

Let’s say I am mildly turned on by this, in both 3rd and 1st person modes…

Well Bethesda had to create the V.A.T.S system for Fallout 3 to cater for the aiming in the previous turn based games. So I am sure these guys are doing the same type of hybrid to be able to give your squad orders.

Doesn’t seem that complicated to me, though it probably is going to take a bit of time getting use to. You play third person but give orders to your comrades as in XCOM EU. Seems fun and personally I cannot wait for it to be released.

I wasn’t really interested in this, but now I am rather intrigued. Maybe I should go back to EU. Stopped playing it when my best squad members all got injured and had to go into an impossible mission with rookies… It didn’t end well.

Lol, that is why I always save before a mission. I know, I know its not the “real” XCOM experience but to lose all your soldiers is just too painful. Btw you could always just skip a mission until your squad is ready again.

I still don’t get the tie-in with the original IP…part of the appeal of XCom (old and new) is the slowly unfolding mystery surrounding the aliens themselves and, as the conflict escalates, the development of your own technology to match it.

This just looks like another action game with aliens in it…I dunno.

I get what you are saying, but I think its like this: Ppl these days have moerse short attention spans, as in really short. So to appeal to the masses they make the game take longer etc.

I’m planning to attempt the “marathon” mode on XCOM EU after my third playtrough (current)

My first playthrough was normal difficulty with ironman on: nerve wracking, lost half my team late in the campaign but managed to claw back. Next I want to try the same with classic difficulty. Great remake IMO 🙂

Agreed, ironman mode classic is next on my list, doing continent for continent startup currently (did NA, then Africa and currently Asia start)

Was my gripe from the start, the whole point of Enemy unknown was unexpected alien colonization fighting off the alien terror with no armor and normal guns. Just surviving and scrounging for alien tech to build a resistance.

I got the feel from subsequent games that they built on it.

Wish they would drop the Xcom from the title.

I’m really looking forward to this game. Aside from dystopian fiction, I really like seeing aliens in games. Go aliens! Also, it’s out the same week as my birthday! 😀
