PC gamers have been able to pre-load games for ages. Buy a game on Steam, well ahead of release, download the files, and you’re able to play the game as soon as the clock strikes midnight. It’s the sort of stuff that’s made midnight launches irrelevant. Now, that feature is available on your PlayStation 4..though it’s limited to just two handfuls of games right now.
Soon, any game you’ve pre-ordered after May 10 will automatically download and be available to play, but as of now, the list is limited to the following games:
- Battlefield Hardline
- Battlefield Hardline Deluxe Edition
- Bloodborne
- Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare
- Destiny
- Dragon Age: Inquisition
- Dragon Age: Inquisition Deluxe Edition
- Far Cry 4
- inFAMOUS First Light
- Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare
- LittleBigPlanet 3
- Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor
- The Order: 1886
- Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark
- Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End
The first of those games to go live is Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark if you feel like testing it out. I’m quite seriously contemplating throwing down the cash for Destiny though, and getting it downloaded and ready for its September release.
I do, however, find it a bit cheeky that you can already pre-order games like Uncharted 4 and LittleBigPlanet 3, especially digitally. The whole point of pre-ordering was to make sure that you got stock – but that’s a constraint that doesn’t exist when it comes to digital content.
You planning on getting any of those games? I’m hesitant, mostly because digital games on the PS4 tend to cost quite a bit more than their retail counterparts here in South Africa. that’s not true for Destiny though, which is available digitally for about R150 less than a full retail price store-bought copy.

I tend to not mind downloading games that I want to play that are “OK” – but games I truly want I want the hard copy. And Destiny may have a collectors edition which I KNOW I will want.
And nothing on that list that is OK – well maybe Transformers but never played any of them! Or even watched any of the movies!

As convenient as pre-loading may be, I’m not sold. (a) I still prefer having a physical copy of a game in my hand (b) I don’t trust the cloud (c) digital is still more expensive than going into BT games and buying my loot (d) I’m old and unwilling to embrace the future (e) you’re all dirty peasants!!!

I will download Destiny, as I don’t see myself trading it in over the next few years!! Might not play it that much two years time but a PvP match every now and then will probably keep me sane!! And R650 is just a great price for it!!
