One of the coolest features of Sony’s PlayStation 4 and its Gaikai-powered streaming service is that you can start playing the games you’re busy downloading before they’re all done taking up hard drive space. The Last of Us, from Naughty Dog will trial that service – on the PlayStation 3.
The game will be released digitally at the same time it hits retail, and should you wish to pick the game up from Sony’s digital storefront, you’ll be able to start playing when the download approaches 50%. So yes, it’ll still likely take you longer to jump in to than just going and picking it up from a store – but that is pretty nifty, and a nice first trial for one of the next-generation console’s key features.
There are a number of previews for the game that have gone live today, based off of a demo build – but the one that’s struck me as most interesting is one by VG247’s Dave Cook – who frankly hated it. He says that it tries to be a shooter, while trying so hard not to be one and that it has large stealth elements – but isn’t a stealth game. It’s not quite an action game either.
“Superb visuals, plot, acting and cut-scenes aside, I’m now cautious that Naughty Dog has cobbled together mechanics and several genres without making sure they fit first,” he says.
It’s quite possible that Naughty Dog – never particularly good at putting demos of their incredible games together – has just tried too hard to make a demo that shows off all of the game’s elements, but in too small a scope.
I’m still terribly excited for the game, which will be out on PS3 in just under a month, on June 14. Despite the cool feature, I’ll still be picking this on up on disc.
