ps4-back

Gameplay footage. It’s the life blood of YouTube, and as soon as we can figure out how to rake in millions of those internet dollars, we’ll be ditching all your asses and buying tropical islands. Ahem, I mean we love you guys. You can capture gameplay right now for hours of YouTube shenanigans on the PS3 and Xbox 360. The Playstation 4 though? That might not be possible.

Because the Playstation 3 had HDCP copy protection in order to prevent folks from pirating the hell out of Blu-Ray, you had to use component cables along with the HDMI cable on your capture device to get that gameplay footage.

The Playstation 4 however, is all HDMI baby, as the folks on NeoGAF pointed out. No AV port means you can’t grab footage then, a big issue for the let’s play community that Sony’s president Shuhei Yoshida responded to on Twitter:

Not much of an answer really. Now, while it’s still rumoured that the PS4 HDMI output will be encrypted, Sony could always find a solution to that, allowing gamers to share more than just a few minutes of gameplay onto YouTube than what is currently possible. The problem though, is that anyone who does this seriously, wants to sit back and edit their work properly first.

I’m hoping that Sony finds a solution. Microsoft already did for the Xbox One, saying that gameplay footage would not be encrypted. Your move Sony.

A real pro does not edit his gameplay. It is always flawless! ;P

I think they are just trying to make it more streamlined… It won’t surprise me of they make the native recording go straight to the YouTube app and then you upload it like that. Will need some editing software though…

I disagree. The one thing MS is doing well is their exclusive line up.

When the Xbox 360 launched, the only decent game was Kameo. When the PS3 launched, the only decent game was Resistance. Oh how spoiled we are with the next gen.

To be honest, I’ve not yet seen an exlusive I MUST have for either console.

I might just wait until 2014 Christmas before picking one up – good deals should be available, and i’ll have a better idea of how each performs, and what games are available.

Features like this capture thing will also have been worked on by then, and if no official method is available then there’ll defo’s be one from a fan. I doubt I’d use the feature in any case.

Xbox One will be the preferred choice for serious streamers as they allow capturing even with your current external video capturing equipment.

      I smell a CoD player.

Jokes aside I just see another gap in MS PR and marketing (they should really fire those guys); they should really market it as a great gamer feature maybe even allow simultaneous capture of Kinect video and content video.

As I understand it no, no external video capturing will work as the signal is encoded(correct me if I’m wrong though).

It’s not that it won’t work, it’s that it’s illegal to use an HDMI stripper.

Sony should allow Share to your PSN account, then you can log in and download and edit.

But didn’t they say beforehand you could record video? And then we all made silly comments comparing the time limit length of recording between the Bone & PS4? Or am I confused?

You can still capture your 15 mins as promised! This just affect the serious streamers like the Let’s Play community etc.! Those guys all use 3rd party external video capturing etc.

I can’t even capture gameplay now. The sound and pic is out of sync and I’m apparently too much of an idiot to figure it out.

even if the rumors are true, you can always upload the footage to facebook, download it, edit it, then guess what… upload it to YouTube!!! no big deal!!! just a little extra effort. But i’m sure Sony will figure out something, they aren’t silly, they know YouTube gameplay is free advertising for them =)
