If it ran last year, it’ll probably run just fine this year. That’s a common rule of thumb when it comes to Call of Duty on PC, with the game rarely requiring a ton of juice behind it to run smoothly. That might not be so true anymore though, especially with this year’s Advanced Warfare entry.
Last week the bare minimum specifications for Sledgehammer’s first Call of Duty title were revealed. They were predictably low, with only the required hard drive space sending up red flags. You’re going to need a lot of space to store Advanced Warfare on your PC, and apparently a lot of pixel power to run it at full tilt too.
A leak over the weekend revealed the recommended PC specs for Advanced Warfare, and it’s all about the war on VRAM again.
- OS: Windows 7 64-Bit / Windows 8 64-Bit / Windows 8.1 64-Bit
- Processor: Intel Core i5-2500K @ 3.30GHz
- Memory: 8 GB RAM
- Graphics: NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 760 @ 4GB
- DirectX: Version 11
- Network: Broadband Internet connection
- Hard Drive: 55 GB available space
- Sound Card: 100% DirectX 9.0c Compatible 16-bit
- Additional Notes: Field of View ranges from 65°-90°
The GTX 760 isn’t the most powerful card on shelves, but that the 4GB variant was listed is pretty significant. More and more PC games are requiring a large chunk of VRAM to deal with high resolution textures, making 2GB seem inadequate now. As with most other “recommended” specs of late, these are probably the recommended ones to get in some 4K gaming.
Still, a lot of the time the game never really uses as much memory as it tell you it will, but it is something to start taking notice of. Especially since it’s just going to increase going forward. Other than that, Advanced Warfare also asks for the same processor as Assassin’s Creed Unity; surprising given the more confined nature of the game.
Advanced Warfare is a notably prettier game than last year’s Ghosts, so it’s not too surprising to see some beefier PC requirements. Does your rig mange to keep up?

Eh they’re playing a game on who has the highest spec game, at this point Call of Duty should be running on a calculator

THAT IS BECAUSE THEY USE THE SAME DAMN THING OVER AND OVER

Yup they are still using the same Quake 3 engine since the start. All they do is increase the texture quality of each version and recycle the stages.

Designing in Q3BSP must get a bit annoying, you can’t blame them for recycling.

It is in 2056 it would appear. Was reading magazine article on the game which is why I know that bit of useless info off the top of my head.

After the piss poor optimization of Ghosts (srsly, my 980 is struggling with it), I’ll hold my breath on the quality of the PC version.

Lol, miskien. But the point is, the latest GPU architecture and it’s battling. Won’t let me play at 1080p unless using DVI. Can only get 900p to work via HDMI. #firstworldproblems but highlights how badly the game was optimised.

HDMI for HD ? I run 1440p through DVI please explain cause this is the frist I heard about this issue ?

Well, I have 2 monitors, a 24″ and a 27″, both 1080p. The 27 is connected via DVI to HDMI (only has HDMI and VGA input) and the 24 is connected via HDMI to DVI (only has one DVI input). If i set the res to 1080p, it will only let me play on my 24 (even though it’s set to my secondary display). After much experimenting i found that dropping the res to 900p allowed me to play on the 27.
Maybe I’m doing something wrong, but it’s the only game in my vast collection that behaves like this.

It looks like they’re trying to give it a fresh spin. For the series I hope it works out. COD used to be very respected.

not even CoD

COD does support 4k though. I am actually amazed how far they are pushing the Quake 3 engine.
Shadow of Mordor recommended specs was for 4k. It might not be the norm but you will see it more and more in the future.

a 4gb gpu!? HAHAHA! when a game like Metro Last night which looks a thousand times better runs fine on a 1gb. You know something is wrong with your game that it needs a 4gb gpu.

I reckon the 4GB is meant for 4K resolution textures. I’m pretty sure the standard HD textures on high will use 1GB to 2GB max

The differance being that CoD is asking this for recommended, not minimum like Unity

One will find that Texture requirements will be as follows:
720p Ultra – 1GB
1080p Ultra – 2GB
4K Ultra – 4GB
or at the very least
Medium Texture res (any screen res): 1GB
High Texture res (Any screen res) : 2GB
Ultra Textures (Any Screen res) : 4GB
You will also find that High will look what current Ultra looks like and that Ultra will now use 4k specialised textures going forward. So setting your textures on High will net you the same result as games in the past as ultra (if you don’t have 4K capable hardware)
So all in all if you could run ultra last gen you can run high current gen and still have the same fidelity level.
Man I need a life….

I have the 2GB version of the 760, and I manage to play shadow of mordor with high textures at 1080p. I have no idea why they recommend 3GB vram since I didn’t notice any problems running it.
