You’re going to need PS Plus for PS4 multiplayer

Here’s something that Sony slipped in at their conference, hoping nobody would really notice. While Microsoft seems to be making its Xbox Live gold service a little more like PlayStation plus, Sony seems to be making its own service a little more like Xbox Live gold – and you’ll now need to pay money to play online multiplayer.

Sony said as much during it’s conference saying you’ll still be able to play single player, offline games without Plus. PS Plus members will be able to use online multiplayer, broadcast and spectate games, utilise cross-game voice chat, and have the ability to “seamlessly join a friend’s online game,” thanks to the paid for service.

ps4mpNormally, I’d launch in to a tirade about PlayStation fans will treat this as a minor thing, even though its the one big differentiator between PSN and Xbox Live – but honestly, I still think that PS Plus offers more value, even if the two services are closer aligned now than ever before. I get newer free games on My Ps3, Ps4 and Vita – all for the same monthly cost.

What do you think? Does the fact that you’ll need to pay to play your PS4 online sour things – or is PS plus just such great value that you’d be happy to pay it anyway?

Not really. The Cost of the mandatory 2mb line more than make up for it if you, like most of SA, use either a 1mb line or wireless.
Also, I guess you can deduct the costs of the extra R1.5K you will be paying for the Xbone.

Well I’ve been paying for Xbox Gold for over 2 years now, since launched in SA and I have squat to shown for it not even a avatar t-shirt…

QFT! Although, I will admit, I am saddened that they’re going this route. The fact that non-PS+ gamers could be online was one of the best features of the PS3.

Considering I don’t sign in to PSN to make damn sure some of my games don’t go online, no biggy. I was considering looking into subbing once my line got upgraded anyway.

    Booooooooo!!

Got that out of my system, so now I can proceed to enjoy the biggest bargain this generation, PSN+.

Anyway, I’ll take the $50 I would’ve paid for Drive Club, get a year’s subscription, Drive Club and loads of other goodies too.

I’ve always been a PS+ member, really it’s worth it.

I mainly wanted it for the cloud save, but I found the amount of full games they dish out more than pays for itself.

PS+ well worth it, I’ll continue on the PS4 with +.

I’m saddened. The fact that PSN was open to all, regardless of sub, was one of the best features of the PS3. However, as a PS+ subscriber (since it was released), I have to say, PSN has had the upper hand over xbox live for a very long time.

It’s the lesser of two evils though. If there was MS style DRM AND PSN+ required then I’d be making a fuss.

PS+ is AWESOME…. Anyone that is online and owns a PS3 should have PS+ anyways…. I don’t see any negative side to this….

And if you are not online…. why would you care lol

the main reason alot of people would care is that many people thinking of getting a ps4 is for planetside 2. planetside 2 is free to play, apparently this won’t be true on the ps4 since you have to pay for this service. its a big enough stumbling block that it will probably keep me from going the ps4 route. I’ll just keep the money and try to build a better PC.

Ok this really sucks that you have to pay extra to play games that you already have paid extra for.

But, I guess it’s still one up from XBox because Xbox requires online activation and a connection every 24hours so you will need a MS memebership anyway for all this.

But I do really wish companies would start moving away from the “pay more for stuff you have paid for already” nonsense.

Although, at least you get free games right?

if you are paying for the service then the games aren’t free. I’ve noticed this odd use of “free” popping up all over the place in marketing and I find it very puzzling. what is so puzzling is that people seem to be accepting it as free. I can see why people might think it’s an awesome deal, but it certainly is not free.

I’m cool with this, I’m not a huge multiplayer fan and don’t have internet at home, so doesn’t matter to me. I can still play my single player games without an internet connection which I’m happy about.

For those of you who value freedom of choice when it comes to your consoles, go SONY PS FOUR.

I would still get a PS4. I don’t game that much online, but you get so many free games on PS4. As many others have stated, its worth it anyway, so its not a problem.

This all makes perfect sense to me. It always bothered me that Sony didn’t charge for their online services… because it’s just something that costs so much to run that one *should* be charging for it. Also, just like with Xbox Live, and just like with anything in the world… when you pay for it, the demand to run a tighter operation comes into play.

If you want to know what I mean, its the difference between asking a family member to do something for you (like design a pamphlet) rather than pay a designer to do it. After you have seen nothing for 2 weeks, you can’t push the family member or friend, because it’s like a favour. When you go pay a designer, they now have to provide you with a service that you paid for, and in most cases will give you what you need, when you need it – and done properly.

So now Sony can’t do ‘good enough’ any more for anything. Now we KNOW we will get a premium service. It’s why – as an online service – XBL got better and better with group chats and beacons and all that jazz, whereas PSN still didnt have proper chat ability.

All that changes now, Sony have shown us that it looks like they know exactly what they are doing, and know exactly where they want to go. Good move.

you seem to have great faith the idea that you get a better service because you pay… I’m a bit more skeptical.

Its not really that I have great faith in it, its just that when you charge for something, you put yourself in that position where you HAVE to up your service because you now have paying customers

not likely, sony has built too much loyalty with announcements over the last week. at this point Microsoft would be more willing to cave to popular pressure. as it stands now Sony would have no reason to.

I personally started on a the original Xbox, then bought a ps3, even though the ps3 was more expensive than the xbox after 2 years xbox users had already gone past the cost of a ps3 after paying for online services. Sony have dogged online users making them pay for a service that was once free, i refuse to pay for a ps3 service, ill buy a fucking xbox.
