YouTube Services Possibly Heading To Next-Gen Consoles

It looks like YouTube may be heading onto next-gen (well… I think we can call them current-gen now) consoles soon and in a big way.

The Playstation 3 already has access to YouTube via its integrated web browser so you would think that it would only really be Xbox 360 gamers that might benefit from this news, but that’s not the case at all.

It looks like Google/YouTube want to bring something a whole lot bigger to your consoles than a couple of videos of cats being cute.

A new job posting has been put up by internet giants Google/YouTube for a Game Console Software Engineer as it looks like they may want to jumping on the console bandwagon soon. Thanks to companies like Netflix raking in some serious dough and adding a whopping 7.7 million subscribers last year, YouTube may want in on the action.

The posting says that the engineer must be able to “build the next generation game-console-based TV experience with You Tube video content” as well as “integrate and optimize with distribution channels and devices including all major game platforms.”.

YouTube may be looking at providing videos with advertising as well as pay-per-stream based services.

As far as regions go, I can see this working out really well for everyone in the US and most of Europe, however regions like ours will likely be given the short end of the stick in terms of major content, but I would at least still be a little happy if the Xbox 360 was given a dedicated YouTube application.
