Zipper Interactive : PSN’s users more mature than XBL’s

HaloFag

Zipper Interactive’s Ben Jones reckons the PS3 is a better fit for their upcoming shooter MAG because Xbox Live is "more juvenile” than Sony’s online service. Anyone who’s ever played an international game of Halo 3 would probably agree. I can only be called a fag by a 12 year old so many times before the stupidity starts hurting my brain.

“I actually consider Xbox Live the more juvenile of the two [due to] the things that are being said over Xbox Live”, said Jones during an event held in London yesterday. “Each service has its own posse. I think the PlayStation audience definitely fits more to our game.”

“As we saw in the beta we’ve got an audience that’s willing to communicate and willing to organize and structure, and help other people to play the game. That’s the most remarkable thing that I saw in the beta – random people helping other players along to try and familiarize themselves with this really cool experience.”

Thing is..I think if every PS3 came with a headset, you’d hear goddamned idiots slinging derogatory epithets, just like on Xbox Live. It’s part of being human I’m afraid. Anonymity on the internet can cause otherwise lovely people to misplace their brains – and with no accountability, they often become douches extraordinaire.

Anyway, screw you n00b fags.

XBL can be painful. Playing MW2, all you hear is people going “Aweeeeeeeeeeeh” and 12 year olds talking for 10 minutes solid but not actually saying a thing.

On the flip side, I played Uncharted 2 the other night and just heard Sandton/Randburg/Boksburg/Boerewors Curtain people going “Shwak” and “Nought” all night.

Can’t decide which is the lesser of two evils.

    Totally unprofessional from a developer.

You really think so? What Zipper is saying is agreed by 99% of the console gaming community. They really are stating the obvious.

This is tame compared to the other developers

Purely from my own experiences, I have to agree with Zipper.

Apart from the strange creatures that inhabit Playstation Home, PSN seems to carry a different breed of gamer. I’ve been playing Killzone 2 almost constantly for the last few months and I’m yet to have a yank scream “nigger”, “motherfuck”, “fag”, “gay” or “homo” in my ears. On xbox live, those seem to be terms of reference even while playing forza.

Perhaps, it’s because of the large American worker class user-base on xbox live?

I just really think people are incredibly stupid when they say things like this.

What about that story where the girl is suing for sexual assault over the PS Home network. Virtual sexual assault… and you cannot actually touch anyone in PS Home.

    Sigh

he obviously generalising. not all live users are ‘tards and not all ps3 people are saints.
but on a whole, i find ps3’s guys to be generally helpful and treat you like a long lost buddy.

I think the main reason why it “appears” that PSN users are more “mature” is due to the fact that the majority of PSN users do not have microphones.

Sure the majority of the locals do, but I’ve found when playing against internationals the ratio of people with mics are vastly outnumbered by those without mics.

Give every PSN user a microphone and you’ll start noticing all the ‘tards.

You might have a point regarding the mics, although I always wondered if it’s not because users are paying for xbox live and therefore develop a sense of entitlement?

For instance, consider the example of an abusive patron in a restaurant, practically throwing their toys around.

Whilst playing the MAG beta, I played a game in which only two guys had mics, within minutes they were already calling each other all sorts of names and saying what they were going to do to the other ones mother.

The only two people who could talk, and that’s all they could say… the scary thing is that they were on the same team, and didn’t even know each other.

I agree with SH in that it’s because there are less mics out there, that and also the comment about America’s user base, those kids really need to get sorted out

Give any userbase a voice and you will start to see some real dicks! example -> http://www.N4G.com, to think those people are on XBL and PSN is scary. The only difference is that PSN doesn’t realy have a voice like XBL because of the lack of mics.
It’s clear Zipper is looking for attention, it’s unnecessary to make comments like this.

I think it has to do with the fact that mostly only more mature people will fork out money to buy a mic. So generally it’s more mature people playing – so less the need to “man up” and call other people names.

When SH mentioned the mics, it really had me thinking. I would like to think that there are more mature folks on PSN (sigh because of an obvious PS3 temporary bias), but the internet and perceived anonymity brings out the troll in all of us.

Perhaps, I’ve just been lucky on killzone 2 so far, and it probably also helps that I can speak neither Spanish, German or Japanese, and the little bit of French I know, is just enough to say “bonjour, je’mapelle Bobby, je suis en sud africain et je t’aime beaucoup et longtemp”.

 I guess, we’ll never know until someone really looks at this issue objectively.
