Tapas that ass; YouPorn sponsors Spanish eSports team

SPAIN

It’s been many months since we first heard that YouPorn were looking to sponsor a competitive eSport team. To my knowledge, many people thought it would be Team Secret – the team comprising of former Na’Vi, Fnatic, and Aliiance players, that landed the partnership. This does not seem to be the case. The sponsorship has now been announced, and a Spain-based team has grabbed it.

The team was called Play2Win, who I have honestly never heard of. They’ve now been rebranded and are known as Team YP, and will be for at least the next six months. They are a Dota 2 team, and will debut this weekend at the Gamergy eSports competition in Madrid.

Brad Burns, the Vice President of YouPorn, released the following statement (via Polygon).

“We’re so psyched to finally make our official entry into gaming and eSports. This partnership has been a long time coming, and I believe that with our backing, along with the expertise that each member of Team YP brings to the table on the virtual battlefield, we can succeed in tearing through the competition at this year’s Gamergy event.

I have no idea how skilled this team is, so I guess we’ll have to wait and see whether they perform well or not . What exactly are YouPorn offering them in the meantime?

“We’ve got a lot of resources at our disposal. As far as what we can offer that other sponsors can’t goes, is exposure. Any player or team that signs with us will not only garner a lot of media attention, but will also be actively promoted to a captive audience of 20 million visitors every day.”

Captive audience indeed! Those are some large numbers though – potential people that might take an interest in eSport… between all their porn consumption of course.

There is no doubting the negativity surrounding the porn industry from the general public. How does YouPorn plan to face it?

“There is no question about it. Being an established adult brand, the stigma surrounding our industry is something we have to deal with all the time. It’s nothing new to us, and we’ve never let it stop us before. If anything, it forces us to explore and be more creative in our marketing efforts than any mainstream companies.”

I really do think that Team YP are in a good position here. They will be getting a lot of exposure and I believe YouPorn have the money to let the team make a proper living out of their gaming career.

I personally see no issue with this sponsorship. The more companies that get involved in eSports, the better. What about you? Are you perfectly fine with it? Or are you morally offended?

… What’s “YouPorn”? Is it like a site where you can pawn your unwanted items online?

Potential viewers? No, people watching porn are NOT going to go and switch over to an eSports event.

Also I honestly don’t think eSports is ready for level of controversy. eSports is still trying to get the world to take it seriously. A move like this could seriously damage that attempt at making ground as a legit sport.
