The unappreciated art of fighting game backgrounds

It’s a damn good time to like fighting games. Technically speaking, they’re evolving into the purest form of that genre, offering experiences that are tailored towards advancing hitting someone really hard. And it doesn’t hurt that they look good as well. The genre has come a long way, but without the humble background, it wouldn’t have nearly advanced this far in gaming life.

Over on Reddit, RudeBootie put together a stunning collection of backgrounds, with animation to boot. Culled from years of fighting games, this 125 image collection will pound-cake ya right in the nostalgia organs.

What’s your favourite? I’m still a sucker for E Honda’s bathhouse stage from Street Fighter 2, but there are just so many of damn good backgrounds on offer here. And honestly, I’d like to frame some of these underappreciated masterpieces.

Or put ‘em in a museum at least, for future generations.

  1. So, here’s an idea. You buy yourself one of those digital photo frames, place each of these in it and let it auto rotate through the images. Ultimate win!

Can those digital frames display gif files?

The kids today are so lucky. I remember going nuts the first time that I saw moving perspective on the SNES. The tiles on the floor in Street Fighter 2 moved into perspective using the MODE 7 engine.

You old bastard! Parallax Scrolling and Mode 7 quite honestly blew my mind. HOLY SHIT, The background can move independently of the floor? WHAT IS THIS MAGIC?

Then it was Pilot Wings and all those crazy polygons in Star Fox 🙂 Pure Magic.

We have become far to spoilt. But I suppose its us demanding gamers that are all graphics whores first and fundamentally that has pushed the industry in such a rapid rate.

I hate to think what the next 20 years has in store. I would never had imagined a game like Street Fighter 2 being on a handheld let alone on a cell phone back in 92.

I hardly find it weird that while while browsing through these gifs guile’s theme kept popping into my head.

Thanks for all your hard work. Alot of great art here. My favorite is the Carnival at night from Art Of Fighting II.
