Friday Debate – I hope Mayweather and McGregor double-KO each other

Ladies and gentlemen, in the blue corner we have an undefeated champ! A boxer with more KOs than common sense, Floyd…MAYWEATHER! In the red corner, we have the MMA superstar, an equally impressive Irish spectacle known across the globe as Conor “tiny nipples” McGregor! So for the millions watching at home and for the thousands in attendance…LET’S GET READY TO WATCH THESE TWO BRAIN DAMAGE EACH OTHER! QUICK LEFT! GIMMER YER BELT!

Yup, walk into anyone wearing a Tapout T-shirt or slurping some of that strawberry caffeine piss known as Monster Energy and they’ll be all giddy with excitement for this weekend. Floyd Mayweather! Connor McGregor! Once in a lifetime, never again! Can MMA defeat pure boxing?

Mcgregor

Listen, I love a good scrap as much as anyone does. There’s no denying the godlike talent that these two pugilists possess, whose records in the ring speak for themselves. It’s just…they’re kind of sh*t people aren’t they? These are fighters whose lives outside of the ring have been fraught with controversy. Mayweather served time in jail for allegedly assaulting his former wife, girls in a nightclub and who knows how many other people who happen to have an X chromosome.

Then there’s McGregor, whose entire persona seems to be that of being the anti-Christ of sportsmanship and whose sheer arrogance hobbled several UFC divisions as he stubbornly refused to follow any rules. McGregor may have made big claims that he somehow always managed to back up with actual success, but he’s still the man who left the lightweight and featherweight divisions of that MMA organisation in a shambles as he refused to grant title shots so that he could pursue his own naked ambitions.

Dana White needs to make a plan and strip him of that damn Lightweight championship belt already.

mayweather

You want to look at this fight in terms of pure athleticism. A meeting of disciplines and style, of technique and raw cunning. But in a world where athletes personas go hand in hand with their in-ring action, it’s kind of impossible to separate the two. Every great fight has revolved around a hero and a villain clashing. Sonny Liston and Mike Tyson were impressive foes against the likes of boxing heroes such as Jack Dempsey and Lennox Lewis.

In an industry where the natural showmanship of American sports entertainment is on display, it’s hard to pick a side when both competitors are wearing black hats as they laugh all the way to the bank. Whoever wins, everyone else loses as McGregor and Mayweather cash in one hell of a payday. The best case scenario is that both turds will clobber each other into simultaneous comas.

That being said, what’s your prediction for the upcoming tumble that’s not so humble?

McGregor will take it I reckon. They’ve dropped the glove weights and MMA fighters, while lacking in some boxing techniques, know how to take some serious punishment.

Mayweather would need to lay down some seriously heavy shots to put McGregor down.

But, who knows how it will swing. I don’t see the match going all rounds but I don’t see it over in anything less than 6 rounds

I see it going this way: McGregor will take all the hits, won’t go down, and he will lose on “technical” points. Or Mayweather will get knocked the flip out

That’s one argument. And while I see the merits of it and do agree to some extent, I am going to be VERY surprised if Connor gets the win.
Despite all his faults, there’s a reason Mayweather is considered one of the GOAT’s in boxing.
And it’s an arena where Connor hasn’t even competed at an amateur level, not since he was a young teen.

Yeah, there is that. Pure skill from years of boxing, combined with a winning career, puts Mayweather in it as the one who, by all logic, should win.

But I reckon the guy is going to be caught off-guard. He’s going to believe his expertise is going to bag it for him and will put him off his guard. He’s going to make a mistake.

That being said. I will not put money down on either to win as it really could swing either way.

McGregor’s “UFC shenanigans” made that company more money in one calendar year than their entire 600 plus fighter roster combined did during the same period. You earn a company that kind of money you might also feel entitled to better treatment than the rest of their employees.

Given Mayweather has pleaded guilty to some charges in the past and was convicted, there is nothing “alleged” about it. Floyd is “the best defensive boxer ever”, meaning he wins by running away. He is in no way a knockout boxer.

Watching Mayweather running around the ring is not boxing, and he is an atrocious role-model for children. He may be an ass as well, but at least Conor will actually fight. Lesser of two evil if you will, but I hope Conor moers him!

Mayweather has 26 KO’s out of his 49 fights. That’s more than half. Guys who have sparred both Connor and Mayweather reckon Mayweather hits harder.
Yes, he runs away and is great defensively, but he can also pack a punch.

Mayweather has taken some huge shots from some of the greatest boxers out there. They all thought they’d catch him, none of them did.
Connor has been beaten up a bit in MMA. When Nate caught him, he dropped.

It’s going to be interesting to watch, that’s for sure. I really cannot make a call on this one and I think that anyone who says with certainty that one or the other is going to win, is not taking all the variables into consideration.

I agree there, I also hope MacG takes it. But I simply cannot say with certainty that he will.
I also HOPE that he gets his ass handed to him in the UFC again. But that would mean actually stepping up to defend a belt he’s won (something he’s NEVER done, in ANY organisation he’s fought in!!).

Fight 42 – KO (cheap shots on guy talking to referee after head but, many boxing pundits disregard this one as a proper KO**)

Fight 21 – KO (1999, last proper KO pundits mention when talking about his KO power)

4 pure KO (even counting the cheap shot), rest TKO

He surely has some power, no denying that, and definitely the speed and technique to deliver it, but not a KO artist at all. If he does his normal Forrest Gump impression, 80% chance of him winning. If he goes after Conor, 60% chance of him getting knocked out. His “super power” is to “not get hit”, and I do not think he will risk his 49-0 going to 49-1, unless he feels he is totally dominating the fight.

**He was technically within the rules because the referee did not send them to corners as he was supposed after the incident. Referee deducted the points and then let the fight continue. Other guy was still talking to referee, hands down, not even looking. Referee at fault, Mayweather just unsportsmanlike.

A TKO still indicates he moered the oke hard enough that he was struggling to stand.
And yes, there have been controversies and yes, most of his finishes were in the past.

My head doesn’t know who to call, there are strong arguments on both sides for who will win and how they will do it.

13 seconds and Aldo was out cold breaking a 10yr unbeaten streak. McG does whatever the fook he wants, for better or worse, he is the most talented personality in combat sports and is a legitimate fighter. Easily makes my top 5 based on his skill alone.

We won’t see anyone else come along anytime soon who is such a complete package, personality and talent rolled into one.

I cannot consider Conor a champ until he actually defends a belt. I recently read somewhere than even in the previous organisation he was in, he never once defended the belt he won. Irritates the crap out of me. Yes, he’s got great skills, but can he actually handle the pressure of being champ for years and years and years, always having that target on his back, every contender out there hungering for his blood, the way Aldo, GSP, Silva and a few others did? We have yet to see proof that he can.

Jones. Jones…..? FUCKING JON JONES!! As much as I don’t like the guy, I think he’s an AMAZING fighter. Or should I say combat athlete, because I consider a real fighter to step up and take on any opponent, even on sort notice, which Jones has shown he will not do.
This latest shit? Er, I dunno man, something seems off. He’s clean for his entire camp and then gets busted in the very last sample taken before the fight? For some cheap shit that was orally taken and was predominantly used by East German athletes more than 20 years ago?
If it’s not a tainted supplement, then fuckit, he was totally sabotaging himself deliberately, something that he’s admitted to TRYING to do in the past (getting blackout drunk a week before a fight? C’mon, Bones…).

            August 26, 2017 at 01:07

Conor never defended his CWFC belts because he was signed for the UFC after an 8 fight win streak. The only hold up here was the Diaz fights which he accepted on short notice (the 1st fight) in order to save the promotions event and then insisted on the rematch which just happened to become the organisations biggest PPV success in history at the time.

Saying he needs to defend belts… I’d ask against who? Ferguson fights once a year now, Khabib is too busy injuring himself with tiramisu during fight week, Chandler fights for Bellator, Alvarez was pulverized in less than 2 rounds, Barboza is great but is not a champion as Cerrone proved and Gaethje already has CTE and has no future in anything beyond 2 years from now that requires any form of mental prowess regardless of how exciting he is now.

I would be very surprised to ever see Conor back in a cage, “Get In, Get Rich, Get Out” has always been his motto and what does he have left to prove? He’s redefined what is possible for an MMA fighter regardless of what anyone’s opinion of him is.

I do feel the Jones thing is dodgy but still… why the f is this controversy ALWAYS around him??? I first saw him on debut against Griffin and knew immediately he was something special, he still is… or should be. His absence from the sport hurt big time and in many ways contributed to Conors rise.

I’ve been an MMA fan for over 12yrs btw, so not a casual.

            August 28, 2017 at 08:53

Conor hasn’t even tried to defend his belts. The first Diaz fight, he didn’t step in to save an event, Nate did. Conor was meant to fight against Dos Anjos for the LW belt, but then Dos Anjos broke his toe. Aldo deserved an instant rematch, the way other dominant champs in the past have had.
And at LW, there are plenty of guys that could have stepped in. Gawd, even bringing in Frankie Edgar would have been good there (though it would have caused an uproar), because the the only really top wrestler Conor has faced was Mendes and Chad took that fight at short notice.

Nah, dude, as huge a fan as I was of Conor at first, his attitude soured me to him.

As for Jones, pretty sure his first fight was Stephan Bonnar, not Forrest Griffin. And yeah, even back then he looked special. Even his DQ loss against Hamill, man, he was kicking Hamill’s ass in that fight before it got called. What really sealed it for me was when he fought against Bader. That to me was the fight between the two young, up and comers in the LW division. And when he destroyed Bader, I knew Jones was going to go on to be absolutely great.

I aint no casual neither. I’ve also been watching for a while.

          • Skyblue

            August 28, 2017 at 10:11

It was Bonnar, apologies. I was prob just reminiscing over THAT fight between Griffin and Bonnar. I’ll always associate those 2 after the first Ultimate Fighter Finale. Conor accepted Diaz as a short notice replacement rather than not have the event cancelled was what I meant, he never turns down a fight being the point. Aldo is one of the best ever but gets injured way too much and hardly fights more than once a year, esp when he was champion.

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed the fight. I think Conor handled himself with aplomb and got a lot of boxers to shut up now and hopefully he gets back to the Octagon again. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/06eb538cb5d2de512e6dd1cacf0a4659d678414438d8d0ab68a466a14aab90d7.jpg

Yeah man, the Griffin vs Bonnar fight was a spectacle. Even though, looking back at it now, it was a sloppy display, there is no doubting the heart they both put into it.
I really though Conor performed well. Though damn, it irritated the crap outta me when the ref spoke exclusively to him at the beginning of the fight. “This is boxing match, so no MMA stuff”. I mean, fucking duh, he’s only been prepping for it over the last few months. That was plain condescending.
But, lo and behold, we missed the finish. My mate’s PVR decided to reboot with at the beginning of the 9th round. And it took 15 minutes to get up and running again. So we missed the ending…. Rather sucked….

Double KO Mortal Kombat style where the heads are decapitated and we don’t have to suffer their arrogant personalities any further

    Floyd WINS. Simple reason
    1. This is not a MMA fight.
    2. 49 Wins = experience in boxing.
    3. We all wish McGregor to win because we hate Floyd.

Floyd will take the victory, but I think Conor will bring his A-game, and it won’t be complete whitewash. I would like to see Rhonda Rousey come out of retirement by scoring an ippon on Floyd just as he’s celebrating his victory.

Seriously doubt Rousey will ever fight MMA again. She likes winning too much.

Dude, I didn’t want to say anything, but Cris Cyborg is TOTALLY A DUDE! I mean just look at XER. Holy mother of balls, I would be shitting liquid if XHER walked past me or cornered me in a lift.

She’s going across to WWE. Less head trauma and more money.

Pretty much worst kept secret. Late responses are due to an evening of Quake Champions World Championship and no shortage of whisky ;-p

You all know Mayweather want the 50-0 for retirement. That’s the only reason he agreed to fight McGregor. They both make tones of money while fleecing the public and Mayweather has his 50-0 record. This isn’t going to be a proper fight, it’s for entertainment and stacks of money only.

What if Conor “forgets” that it’s a boxing match and accidentally roundhouse kicks Floyd into the next century?

Sadly, no. I was hoping the newspapers would go into a frenzy over something weird like that.

For non boxing fans, was it too much to ask for complete weirdness at the event?

I know the fight is over, but before the fight I said it is like asking Usain Bolt to run against the 200m Hurdle champion. There is a chance that he might win, but it is not his specialty
