Midweek Mouth-off: Dumb, Dumber and Dumberest

Dear Ridley Scott, thank you for Prometheus. It is currently the best movie to gleefully discuss drunk.

From the most squeamish, non-procedural scientists in the galaxy; to a ball-busting, “I’m always prepared” career woman who fills her escape pod with all kinds of sharp, fragile breakables and a men-only surgical unit… From heroes who can only think to run forwards (not sideways) to escape a falling structure; to the film’s complete ignorance about female anatomy…

Really, the stupidity in all areas is headache-inducing.

So today we want to know what movies have really irritated you with their dumbness? What films went from great to awful in your mind when onscreen logic went out the window and you found yourself continually asking “But why don’t – ?”

Then again, if you’re someone who is happy to suspend your disbelief, and you refuse to let silliness hamper your viewing experience, also please let us know.

I think we all know it was for him… but the fact that it could work on males and not females made no sense what so ever

The fact that it was made only for males does nothing for the story itself.

It provides no challenge, no drama, says nothing about the world (barring the fact that sexism has presumably advanced enough to allow machines to be discriminatory, too) and it reveals nothing about character.

There’s that one smidgen of rumour that the machine has been made specifically for someone but that means nothing too.

So it’s pointless and the sort of thing that screams “Idea not developed past 1st draft”.

        Sigh…

That’s the one theory making the rounds, and one that Charlize has sorta kinda vaguely hinted at. Personally though, I think it was just sloppy scripting.

Even with the glaring issues, Prometheus was still enjoyable. It kept me entertained throughout the whole experience. Maybe it’s just because I’m starved for a good sci-fi.

Signs  I enjoyed the film except at the end – So a technologically advanced alien race that has mastered interstellar travel comes to Earth. Water is deadly to them yet invades a planet which consists of two-thirds water without wearing protective gear? Did they not scan the planet before landing? They forgot to put on their space suits? It’s like us going to a planet that consists mostly of acid and run around naked.

It depends on how well the movie sells it to you. Rewatching Total Recall recently, I noticed several BIG plot holes and mistakes. The best: in the scene where he jumps through the glass security sheet, the security guards just wander off instead of getting involved in the chase. It’s as if they smelled Michael Ironside or something. Yet I can live with that.

You do realize that it was Arnie that jumped through the glass.  Security guard most likely looked at the guy he must chase, then thought about his pay cheque and went “Meh.”

True, but you’d think he’d at least run until he left the shot. But you can clearly see one security dude just kinda loiter there, as if he forgot the camera was rolling.

I think movies can be enjoyable, even if they are not completely believable. All this discussion makes me actually want to go see it… 🙂
