I think The Blair Witch Project is still the scariest film I’ve ever seen. Followed closely by Paranormal Activity and Silent Hill.

The biggest scare I ever received in a cinema was in The Ring, the scene with the girl in the closet. I generally don’t get scared by horrors, because I easily pick up on the little clues from the director that something’s about to happen.

There were no clues there, no build up at all. One second I’m watching a subdued conversation between two ladies at a funeral, the next I’m voiding my bowels in sheer terror.

I’d agree with Christo’s first two, then replace the terrible Silent Hill with the Shining!

I remember one of the earliest horror films I’ve and really enjoyed was Fright Night (1986 version). I need to find that again and rewatch it. I’m probably going to be embarrassed in how lame it will be.

I remember one of the movies that frightened me when I was but a nipper, Stephen King’s Silver Bullet, really didn’t like werewolves back then.

Without a doubt, John Carpenter’s The Thing. I never knew what the hell that creature was, or what it would turn into, but the practical effects used when it transformed from a dog form into nightmare fuel? Still gives me the shakes, to this day.

Agreed with Darryn about The Thing, I love it. Others I am particularly fond of are the Paranormal Activity films (besides maybe #2) and Insidious, Event Horizon, [REC]. [REC2]…do I go on?
