Since IMAX was brought back to the country, in just two and a half years Ster Kinekor have rolled out seven new theatres, which is one of the fastest IMAX rollouts ever done. On Wednesday night, I had the privilege of attending the launch of South Africa’s newest IMAX theatre, which has just opened at the brand new Mall of Africa.

With over three hundred guests in attendance, the opening was a major success, and the brand new cinema complex was christened with a special preview of X-Men: Apocalypse. The latest in the IMAX family boasts space for 364 cinema goers, and an impressive 18.8m screen, which is second only to the IMAX at Eastgate Shopping Centre. The new cinema complex is pretty swanky in general, with two Cine Prestige cinemas and VIP lounges to complete the luxury experience.

With so many great new releases like Alice Through The Looking Glass, Finding Dory, Warcraft and Star Wars: Rogue One coming up, IMAX fans definitely have a lot to look forward to. And, now with four of the country’s seven IMAX cinemas, Gauteng is definitely the place to be! If you’ve never been to an IMAX cinema before, you’re officially out of excuses.

Cape Town has ONE IMAX cinema…..ONE!
Plus it’s a smaller screen not 18.8m like in JHB. Plus the ONE cinema is deep in the north so half of Cape Town need to travel 100 km round-trip.
Ster-Kinetor have….and I’m quoting them here…”taken note”….of my displeasure but nothing seems to be in the works. Disappointing in the extreme.
