Xbox 360 brings World Cup fever to previously disadvantaged children

Primary schools battle it out for tickets to the 2010 World Cup

Johannesburg, 2 June 2010 – With eight days to go until one of the world’s greatest sporting events, hundreds of children will be donning their soccer strips and tightening their laces to take home the ultimate prize in the Xbox 360 primary school 5-a-side soccer tournament which takes place on Friday, 4th June at the Marks Park Municipal sports ground, Emmarentia.

The soccer challenge will see 32 teams from primary schools across Gauteng coming head-to-head to see which team will win tickets to see a 2010 World Cup soccer match. Premier Soccer League (PSL) players from the country’s top teams, including Tefo Mashamaite (Bidvest WITS Captain), Steve Lekolea (United FC), Fabian McCarthy (Moroka Swallows), Jimmy Tau (Keizer Chiefs Captain),Morgan Gould (Supersport United) will be present at the tournament to show their support to the youth and share some of their greatly admired skills with the children.

School children from the Ekurhuleni Metro, Pretoria, Soweto and the Vaal will compete in the Xbox 360-sponsored tournament, which will take place in a 10 minute knockout format. The winning team will receive tickets to the 2010 World Cup. Other prizes will be given for star performances during the tournament, including an Xbox 360 console hamper for the Player of the Tournament, autographed Nike boots for the Top Goal Scorer, autographed Nike gloves for the Top Goalkeeper of the tournament as well as numerous other spot prizes.

“With football euphoria grabbing the nation, Xbox 360 is thrilled to provide over 200 primary scholars from previously disenfranchised communities the opportunity to take part in a fun-filled day with Xbox 360 and for the winners, a once in a lifetime chance to experience the big event in our country,” says, Yvette van Rooyen, Marketing and product manager for Xbox 360 South Africa.

The gates open at 08:00 am on Friday 4th, so be sure to join at the tournament or offer support for the players at the Marks Park Municipal soccer grounds, for a day filled with plenty excitement geared towards making a difference in the lives of these kids. Xbox 360 kiosks will be available at an entertainment station for competitors and visitors to enjoy the latest in next generation gaming.
