Magic Ball is essentially a new and modern version of brick-breaking games like Breakout & Arkanoid. If those games are before your time, then let me explain. You are in control of a little ship, capable of scrolling from left to right along the bottom of the screen. Right in front of you are various objects that you need to destroy by bouncing a ball of the bumper of the ship. If you happen to miss the ball as it’s coming past you, you’re ship explodes and you lose a life. The object of the game is to destroy all the 3D objects on a level and the level ends once everything has been destroyed.

What makes Magic Ball exciting is it’s depth of field (i.e. 3D) and amount of power-ups. In the older games, everything was 2D so calculating where the ball would end up was straight forward. By using 3D objects, Magic Ball has made everything just a tad more challenging… due to the design of the objects (castles, pirate ships etc.), it is now more difficult to calculate the trajectory of the ball.

By destroying the objects you can randomly get power-ups that changes the material of your ball, adds weapons to your ship or unleashes some natural disaster. The majority of these power-ups are timed and can only be used for a short period but they can also be negated by running into a normal ball power-up.

What I need to add is that Magic Ball is the epitome of a casual game. Expect to clock this game in about 4 hours and easily unlocking about half of the trophies in that first go. I do however need to point out that the game is only R95.00 which includes offline as well as online multiplayer and co-op modes. The game is overall very enjoyable and fun and can be easily played while waiting for the missus to add the final touches to her make-up.

Verdict: A must buy for some brick-breaking nostalgia and an overall fun casual game.

It is… that’s what I love about the XBA & PSN, taking games like this and revamping them.
