Adam Sandler and five sidekicks go West, which is even more stupid than it sounds.

  • What is it?

A half-Indian warrior sets out to retrieve enough cash to help ransom his father from a notorious outlaw gang. Along the way he discovers his old man’s other offspring and they gang together for maximum effect.

  • I would like it if I like…

Adam Sandler’s way left-of-field stuff like You Don’t Mess With The Zohan and deep slapstick films like A Million Ways to Die in the West. Or you’re drunk, it’s late and there is nothing to watch.

  • Is it good?

Ah…. no, but don’t hold that against it. This movie will at times be trying for even the staunchest of Sandler fans. But you can’t accuse it of being uneven: The Ridiculous 6 is wall-to-wall with slapstick, toilet gags and just buckets of stupidity. It can also be wildly offensive, though does not exist entirely of donkey excrement jokes as some reviews have claimed. Not entirely… But the cast is good and some bits are really funny. In his review of A Million Ways To Die, Nick wrote about ‘jumping the shark’: that point when a show passes its sell-by date. Many think Sandler got there long ago. Many think he’s still got it. The Ridiculous 6 will only serve to reinforce both sides.

  • Should I watch it?

If it’s 10pm and you are without options? Definitely. The Ridiculous 6 reminds me of when you trawled DVD stores for some piece of crap you haven’t seen and may kill time in an amusing fashion. Netflix is nothing other than a cheap, convenient DVD store and The Ridiculous 6 plays right into that. It’s not worth paying to see on a cinema and is much better suited for late night beer-and-pizza movie fests. The production value is decent and Sandler knows how to make a movie. This is not unfunny, just awful – and that is a big difference. Seltzer & Friedberg movies are humourless abortions trying to be funny. The Ridiculous 6 is funny in a way that it doesn’t care if you don’t go along with it. So just relax and enjoy the ride (though you might regret it).
