Assassin’s Creed Rogue review round up

The old-gen bound Assassin’s Creed Rogue got almost none of the attention this year, with the spotlight instead squarely on Assassin’s Creed Unity. That focus, it seems, may have been misplaced. Despite Unity’s unexpectedly low review scores, at least one of this year’s Assassin’s Creed games is indeed very good. Set during the Seven Years War, it’s focused on one Shay Patrick Cormac – an Assassin who becomes a Templar.  Here’s what critics think of Assassin’s Creed Rogue.

GameInformer – 8.25

For players trying to figure out which game to tackle first when two Assassin’s Creed games release on the same day this year, the answer is to start here. Shay’s story closes a number of story loops left behind on the American front of the Templar/Assassin conflict, and offers a crucial first step into the new European theater of war. Rogue proves why it’s time for the franchise to chart some new territory, but leaves no doubt about why we fell in love in the first place.

Cheat Code Central – 4.1/5

Frankly it feels like Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag all over again. However, Black Flag was an OK game so that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. We will have to see how it eventually stacks up against Unity, but as the “booby prize” so to speak, the consolation effort for people who are still stuck in the last generation, Rogue is still a solid and interesting game. It may feel a bit dated, but for some of us it almost feels nostalgic. I’m frankly happy to be sailing on the high seas one more time, before docking on the shores of the next console generation.

Financial Post – 9/10

 Assassin’s Creed Rogue is a fantastic victory lap for the seventh generation console era, with lots of juicy extra details about beloved characters. With a bit of YouTube watching to catch the main story points of AC III andIV, Rogue is a thoroughly accessible complete experience for new players as well. It offers a wealth of challenge on numerous fronts, and in a time of divided government, various forms of global zealotry, raging twitter fights and first-world online harassment of pretty much everyone, it reminds us that the people we think are monsters are usually just people with a different point of view.

Lazygamer – 8.5/10

For those who haven’t played an Assassin’s Creed game in years, this one is well worth picking up. It brings together the best innovations the franchise has seen, combining the naval and urban experiences with excellent characters and a compelling storyline. A must-play for fans of the franchise, and arguably the best Assassin’s Creed game to date. Combining fantastic story telling, intriguing characters and tons to do, Rogue takes Assassin’s Creed to the pinnacle of old generation capabilities. Niggling issues are still present, but the story and characters make the experience seriously worthwhile.

There aren’t actually too many reviews out, at least in English, anyway.  Ubisoft, for whatever reason, hasn’t been all that keen on sending out copies of this one, presumably to allow media to focus on Unity.
