Assassin’s Creed: Unity is the first of two core entries into the franchise this year, taking the weight of old consoles off its shoulders and aiming to act as a new ear for Ubisoft’s beloved franchise. A new assassin, a new time period and refined gameplay. Unity is meant to set the bar for the future, but do critics think it reached high enough?

Destructoid – 7/10

If Ubisoft fixes the glitches, Assassin’s Creed: Unity will be a much stronger game, even if the ceiling is a bit lower in general. Unity’s potential is not as strong as some of the better entries in the series, but it’s good enough for existing fans to continue to journey.

IGN – 7.8/10

Assassins-Creed-Unity-2.jpg

Assassin’s Creed Unity leverages the new-generation consoles to add spectacular new sights and successful co-op multiplayer, but in doing so, it’s created some substantial new problems instead of solving the series’ most persistent ones. The scope is stunning, the customization is satisfying, and the multiplayer touches upon some really ambitious ideas. But the lack of a strong main character or interesting take on the Assassin’s Creed universe costs it momentum and excitement, and the persistent control problems are still a thorn in its side. The first truly new-gen Assassin’s Creed game is a gorgeous, entertaining, and successful proof of concept for what lies ahead for the series, though it isn’t what I’d call revolutionary.

Gamespot – 7/10

But is it the next-gen Assassin’s Creed game we’ve all been waiting for? Not quite. It’s very good, maybe even great in places, but the story’s smaller focus has come at the expense of its exquisitely rendered backdrop. The grandness and spectacle that so often graces the finest Assassin’s Creeds is sadly sorely lacking here.

Polygon – 6.5/10

The ingredients are all here for a spectacular new standard for the series on Sony and Microsoft’s new machines. But in the quest to build something that looked and sounded “next generation,” Ubisoft Montreal failed to fix the problems that have accumulated over so many annual release. Combined with an uninspiring story, and a long list of considerable technical problems, Unity falls short of the fresh start Assassin’s Creed needs.

Shacknews – 7/10

This is everything I’ve come to know about Assassin’s Creed. It’s a great story wrapped in a more confusing story, some satisfying stealth action, and mechanics that leave me banging my head against the wall. It’s Assassin’s Creed, warts and all.

Joystiq – 2.5/5

Assassin’s Creed Unity is the best and worst of Assassin’s Creed. It’s hard not to appreciate everything that it gets right, and you’ll have a good time if you can wrangle some friends for co-op, but it’s impossible to ignore where Unity falls tragically short.

Judging from that, not high enough at all. We’re still working on our own review, so expect it up sometime in the near future. Have these reviews swayed you from picking up the first Assassin’s Creed on current-gem hardware?

Nope for once I don’t really care!! Blackflag was a good game, made great through the naval battles!! Seems that the yearly release idea is compromising the story side of the game, that is not what I want in my games. I want a good story, good controls and I am happy… I can live with a glitch and a bug here and there, just give me something fun to play!!

I’m playing Black Flag on PS4, it looks so good and it’s so much fun to play. I could do the naval battles on it’s own all day long.

Yeah I’d probably buy black flag before this.

Haven’t you played Blackflag yet? It really is a good game, if you not the most interesting story ever!! But the naval battles is just sublime!!

The Ass Creed franchise just fails to excite me for some reason. I don’t know why.

It had it’s moments over the years, but I actually liked that there was a present day story as well…. Now it just feels like you are here, get in the Animus and have a fun trip!! So they have lost me somewhere along the line!!

Because it is not exciting? I played 1 & 2

Same here, it’s too mundane I guess. they have to add naval battles or shooting down planes in WW2 to liven it up.

BTW I see you dipped into FIFA15 in the end? Last I saw you were “going to hold off”…hahahaha…at the time I didnt think you could 🙂

I got 15 when I bought Xbox One bundle so anyways…played one game and looks like FIFA14. So will be good when I decide to pay attention to it.

PES is out and I do want that.

I said that I would wait for the first patch and I did, the day it came out I bought the game… The game was still not fixed after that patch, will wait for the second patch next year!! The PS4 version has already had 2 patches come out….
The online is a bit of a mess though, the defending is horrendous from a kick off!! The guy can run straight through and score at will, pisses me off something terrible!!
            Also considering PES

Yeah you did say that actually. We may end up meeting on PES then.

That is the problem I had, I was concentrating on the ship more than the story line!! I had to start doing fast travel, because I only wanted to take down other ships 🙂

AC IV was really good. Had high hopes for Unity but appears I will pick this up later down the line when it is far far cheaper.

I’m at a point in my life where I can’t afford all games ever. I would rather spend money on a game that delivers a solid experience. I can’t afford mixed

Yeah I’m pretty much of the same mindset. This won’t see my money, except as part of a humble bundle if I want the other games. xD

Is money or time the ultimate decider? I feel if I had the time, the money would be found for more games. But yes, your point is very well taken, Sir Umar

Interesting. I read the DA:I review round up first this morning.

A big difference, yet both games look compelling, in their own ways. I think

Also not jumping on this immediately. Farcry 4 im pretty sure will be my next purchase. Pricy games make for a a bit less impulsive buying and alot more patience.
