Love Angry Birds but tired of flinging the little buggers across the screen? Perhaps you feel the green pigs have been treated unfairly? Bad Piggies gives you the chance to experience things from their point of view.

Fortunately, it’s not an Angry Birds clone where you fling pigs around the screen instead of birds. It’s an entirely new game. The scoring is, however, the same: you earn stars based on your achievement in a given level and progress to new and generally more difficult puzzles. That wonderful art style of Angry Birds is still there, however, as well as some new cute and catchy music and sound effects.

In Bad Piggies, you are something of a mad builder or inventor, helping the green pigs build contraptions to reach their goal in each level, all building towards getting those eggs from the Angry Birds. If you’ve played the Incredible Machine at all, you’ll feel right at home here. It is a bit simpler than TIM, though, as you have a limited grid in which to place the few items you are given for a level.

These items can include balloons, fans and various types of wheels (and of course a piggy!), which you have to put together into a contraption that will transport the piggy to the end goal of the level. There are also bonuses to be picked up along the way. Earning 3 out of 3 stars may also require you to finish within a certain time. All of these goals can be viewed before starting the level, so you will have a very clear idea of what you need to just pass the level, or to excel.

As you proceed, you’ll get more and more weird and wonderful items to use to create your contraption, including springs, airplane wings and tails, TNT, and much more. The levels increase in difficulty and you will need to try lots of combinations to succeed in some of the harder levels. The nice thing is that the game keeps whatever you’ve built to pass a certain level, meaning you can relive your glory at a later time, or try to improve the design to earn more stars.

At present there are three stages, each including dozens of individual levels. If previous Rovio games are anything to go by, they will be adding even more levels in the not too distant future. Once you’ve got past the preliminary levels, you’ll unlock sandbox mode. Each sandbox is a massive level containing many items to collect, and a host of tools to build with. As you complete more ‘normal’ levels, you will unlock additional items in sandbox mode, giving you even more stuff to work with.

Bad Piggies
Bad Piggies is a refreshing change from the makers of Angry Birds. It still has that great Rovio flavor without feeling like the ‘same old, same old’. If you’re looking for a new puzzle game to keep you busy, or if you loved TIM back in the day, Bad Piggies is worth a look.
