DmC Devil May Cry Definitive Edition Review Round-up

DMC (3)

I NEED MORE REVIEWS POWER! I’ve loved the Devil May Cry franchise for far too long. I was there when it became more than just a spin-off of Resident Evil, and I was there when the game had its finest hour in Devil May Cry 4. But times changed, and so did attitudes towards keeping the game development for this franchise in-house at Capcom. Ninja Theory unleashed their vision for Devil May Cry in 2013, and it was an underrated thrill-ride of note. It has now of course joined a long list of “remastered” titles. And it looks like this definitive version of DMC is for the fans.

IGN – 8.9/10

DMC (3)

DmC Devil May Cry: Definitive Edition brings the same great game to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, along with a couple of tweaks to make it feel different for returning veterans. The sharper visuals, smooth 60-fps gameplay, and other features and enhancements gave me plenty of reasons to be happy about coming back, and to recommend that you pick it up for the first time.

Gameinformer – 9/10

DMC (1)

No game is perfect. Even when we play the best ones, we find things that we wish the developer had done differently. Devil May Cry: Definitive Edition is a rare case where the developer goes back and fixes those things, big and small. Whether you’re a newcomer or a devoted fan, this is a remaster done right.

Polygon – 8/10

DMC (2)

It’s a nice collection for the completionist, especially if you’ve been looking for a great character action game on PS4 or Xbox One. But if you already played DmC: Devil May Cry on last-gen consoles, there’s not a lot of reason for the return trip.

Destructoid – No score

DMC (4)

I’m kind of torn on the “Definitive” concept given its price point, though. In many ways much of it could have been delivered in a free update (especially if there’s a PC version in the works, which hasn’t been confirmed yet), but if you haven’t already experienced DmC, getting this package at a discount would be the best way to do it.

Videogamer – 9/10

DMC (2)

It may be another HD remake, but DmC does more than dust off and polish up an old title. In fact, it doesn’t really improve its looks much beyond the resolution and frame rate, but rather gives players the tools to tailor the experience. This is a remake that’s been created based on community’s feedback, upping speed, increasing difficulty and moving items to keep player’s on their toes, meaning there’s plenty here to justify a return, especially at a budget price point.

The Definitive Edition is out from today where it’ll most likely be torn to shreds on Metacritic once again, thanks to some whiny crybabies. Feel free to post that GIF now. I know you guys have been waiting to do it all day.

        The choice comment?

“I am wholly convinced that the only people who rave about this posittively are either paid to do so or are not people. Humanity is not simply given, it must be earned and can be lost. A level of ignorance this grand is a sin no God can forgive, a forfeit of the gift of life and knowledge given to us as a species. Hopefully they all die off quickly and are written off as an unfortunate generation of mentally-diseased so normal, actual people can live in the world as it should be.”

        Just. WOW.

Ahh okay. I still stand my stance that this game, while it is good, is not amazing and lacks a ton of combat depth. But it is by no means as bad as the fanbois made it out to be.

Nor is praising it worthy of the kind of vitriol spewed forth from the bowels of the internet. Like that comment above. Damn.

LOL pulled from that article. “The game is bad because it’s too different. The funny thing is these are probably the exact same people who’ll moan that Call of Duty is the same every year.” The thing is, don’t change to good for worse and keep the mediocre the same. COD AW tried something new at least

The game in itself as a non canon DMC title is very, very good. But it just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I’ll admit I’m being overly nostalgic but you cant even begin to compare previous DMC titles to this.

The original was torn apart on Metacritic by fans whom Ninja Theory gave the middle finger to. Now Capcom is trying to buy back some credibility by adding all the things the fans originally complained was lacking.
The criticisms were justified on Metacritic and everywhere else online. Fans weren’t happy and Capcom needed to know. This definitive edition is proof that they heard it loud and clear.

“valid criticisms” – That’s the problem. Go and read some of the comments in the article linked above. Most people acted like utter and complete assholes. Criticism is good, acting like a dick is not. Not speaking about anyhing you said, but rather about the way some people handled the whole thing.

I also dont understand who this game was supposed to have been marketed to. Capcom pretty much gave the middle finger to the old fans and instead try to grab the grunge/emo types? But wasnt this when the hipster movement became large and everybody who saw this just thought that the game was trying too hard to be counter-culture?

Also interesting to consider for a game about fighting evil corporations who control the media; it was the DMC fans that ended up fighting Capcom who were paying off videogame sites to put in a good word for the game.

I love fair comment and discussion about video games. That’s why I’m here. But all I see is “This game sucks and you’re being paid off with your good review and that makes you a cunt because I’m a fan who doesn’t like something.” Instead of “I don’t like this – Capcom, please can you look into this?”

Unfortunately a lot of people (including Capcom and videogame sites) bundled both those examples together.
You may be tired of hearing it, but it needs to be said. Developers need to know it’s not cool to flip off an existing fanbase to try and get a bigger profit. Videogame journalists need to show more integrity and tact – especially before attacking their very own readers by calling them crybabies.

Yup, completely agree, and people might laugh at the whole mop wig thing, but it is a HUGE middle finger to fans. I don’t think it’s fair that Capcom and ESPECIALLY Ninja Theory and Tameem treated the fans the way they did.

          • Hammersteyn

            March 10, 2015 at 16:42

I would have been fine if the mop cutscene was not in the game, it feels like they put it there to rub it in.,

          • Pariah

            March 10, 2015 at 15:14

This I can actually agree on. It happens too often where the innocent, legitimate complaints get lost in the vitriol. It’s more a symptom of the current internet culture than it is of any specific news agency or game developer.

Saying that, the devs who do care sift through the shit and listen to the genuine complaints.

Final note: you’re keeping it civil and not name-calling and the like, hence a discussion is possible.
