Forza Motorsport 3 Review – Return Of The King

Forza Motorsport 3 is finally here and we have had our grubby paws on many a car wheel this week to bring you this review.

Since it’s surprise announcement at E3 this year, fans have been losing their minds at the thought of having to wait to play it but that time has come to an end. Turn 10 have made some pretty big claims about their new title over the past couple of months and now it’s time to see if they have put their money where their collective mouths are.

Slam it in first, pound the pedal into the mat and drop the clutch. It’s go time for the Forza 3 review.

Forza 3 is Turn 10’s second attempt at a sim racer on the Xbox 360 and this time they have added a whole list of improvements to the features that already existed in Forza Motorsport 2.

Forza 3 give you lots to do and I will discuss the different elements below, the career seems like a good place to start.

Corvettes, Cobras and Calenders

The career mode is a breath of fresh air when compared to other racing titles of late, including Forza 2.The interface and menu’s are all super clean and very easy to navigate and on the whole just feels like a nice place to be while you make your way through the career and so on.

As with most racing games, you begin with a slow(ish) little front wheel drive car and have to compete in some smaller races. The pace picks up pretty quick though and before you know it, you are behind the wheel of a monster of a machine.

The best part about the career mode is it’s calendar, layout and the way in which you can progress. After every series, you are given options based around what cars you have, or if you would like to see more tracks or try something new, it keeps things flowing very nicely.

screen1.jpg

^ Photo mode can make any little car look awesome

A nice break from the norm is that special events are held on the weekends and will run over the course of say, a month, meaning that you only race one race of that series per weekend (in game days). This means that you may do a race in the series, spend the next week doing a four race event and then slip back into the second race of the championship that you were in when the weekend rolls around again.

Cars are unlocked when you win certain events or reach certain driver levels and everything keeps progressing very smoothly and eventually opens up drag events, endurances races, point to point races and more.

It’s Car-ma

Speaking of cars, there are a ton of them, 400. All of the cars have been selected for their ability to kick ass. Even the slowest of the bunch that you begin with are all the sporty versions of their models.

Each car handles differently and with the inclusion of the cockpit view, you get a wonderful feel of the car that you are in. Jack up the assists or turn them all off until you are comfortable and off you go.

Tuning is also a big part of the Forza experience and when it comes to upgrading and fiddling with your setups, Forza still has it all. For those of you who don’t like dealing with all of that jazz, there is a wonderful new function that can automatically upgrade your car for you, should you accept after it gives you the details.

Getting Behind The Wheel

There isn’t much that needs to be said about the driving physics/mechanics in Forza 3. The cars all feel real and you really get a sense of having your tires on the tarmac. Damage your car and you will have to rewind, or if in multiplayer either pit of deal with the fact that your car is pulling to one side or having issues changing gears. It’s all there and it’s just enough to keep things real without making it feel overbearing.

Hardcore gamers and casual car fanatics can both have a lot of fun with Forza 3 as Turn 10 have put a lot of effort into adding features that will keep the game accessible to all.

The usual features such as ABS, TCS and so on are all there as well as the ability to have a recommended breaking or racing line turned on for those unfamiliar with new tracks. To keep things really accessible, Turn 10 have added in two major assists that come in the shape of an unlimited ability to rewind the race as well as an assist that will actually brake for you.

It would have been nice if the rewind function had limitations, as it may cause you to lose your sense of fear, in the knowledge that every screw up can be instantly reversed and retried.

Well to be completely frank, yes, because its competition still hasn’t arrived this generation, which is working in Turn 10’s favor at the moment. After playing this I am really keen to see what GT5 will bring to the plate and how they will compare

No,return of the naked emperor and his new clothes.I wont buy something thats want to convince us its a new game when CLEARLY its not

      I’m confused.

Btw,Im begining to think you guys are reviewing games a bit weirdly. . .other sites are giving this game 9, sumfink. .and thats suspicious because they fail to mention its flaws.to name a few,car models as far back as Forza1 are recycled.tracks from Forza2 are DIRECTLY recycled to Forza3 with zero improvements.the damage model has gone backwards from forza2.the interior view is terribly limited and in some cases after stage 3 weight reduction the seat goes to the wrong side of the car and the driver sits in mid air.thats being nit picky.but, not seeing a shift animation when changing gears is ridiculous.the clutch button is gimicky.none of the cracks in the windscreen can be seen when driving from the inside.and . . .we dont get the basic dlc THAT EVERYONE that buys it gets.that and the fact that photo mode is stuck with the stupid driver.and there arnt night/rain tracks.I fail to see how Forza3 gets this score.ridiculous

I personally am not a fan of scores – There’re two pages of beautiful words, and you get hung up on 2 digits?

Scores really are just arbitrary numbers.

Anyway, whatever it gets scored is the reviewer’s opinion – and reviews are just that, opinions. Whether you choose to agree with them is up to you.

thats why most review sites give readers the option to comment, to either let zealots vent their opinions or impartial (lol) gamers to give their praises.

but i’m sure you guys are well versed in back lashes from said zealots… feed ’em and they grow stronger 😉

Also for anyone who is interested, we weren’t given a review copy early and need to placate Microsoft with this review, we got our hands on this title via other means.

Forza deserve the good reviews it get, and GT need to shape up because if I recall the last proper gt got a 89
in 2005. At that time a unknown racer on the xbox got a 92, so The First forza 2005 already dethroned GT in the eyes of the reviewers and because Forza added a lot more, After then Forza 2 go a 90 also better than gt4, and now forza 3 sits on a average of 92 on meta critic.
And this is one of the reasons why GT will only release in 2010 so that it can at least compete with what forza brought to the table.

And Turn 10 is delivering a Great game every 2 Years.
    Not half baked demos.

New game every 2 years ? Dream on this is a half arsed update. Forza 2 was a new game for sure but 3 is not. still a great game, but they promised me more than this.

I hope they dont bundle this so we can get some decent numbers on the sales. Forza 2 only sold well as it was incuded in a bundle deal with a 2 pad and viva pinata. which every body took as it was a cheap second pad. I wanna see some real numbers for this puppy. And GT5 was not delayed because of what forza 2 brought to the table coz GT5 has the same half arsed damage model as forza 3 already lol.

Okay, I’ve played the game solidly since Wednesday. Point 1 – the people bitching abouth MP clearly hasn’t played the game yet, MP works exactly the same as in FM2, except you cannot change your tuning in the lobby – your car is loaded with its saved tune from your garage, this was intended and I do not mind it.

Point 2 – All the tracks have been worked on. Except for the cripser colours etc, there are some brilliantly done elevation changes, curbs chanegs etc on all previous FM tracks, but hey guess some of the PS guys won’t know – they just looked at the pics…

Point 3 – The engine sounds have been given one of the biggest overhauls ever. Every car sounds like its reallife counterpart. You can hear the Turbo Intake, it is pure beauty.

Point 4 – FM3 shipped with 400+ cars and 27 locations with 100-odd different tracks; I think this is 3-4 times the amount of tracks and 100 more cars than FM2 – now how can this then be a version 2.5?

What they have done right is make the game easy enough for my 3 year old to play or difficult enough for seasoned racers – it’s all up to you.

Bow down folks – The King has returned

Forza 3? declaring it the king? you know that was pure flame bait. The King is Declared after a war not before! Saying Forza 3 is the King is the Same as Saying Blur is the king.

You guys can pretend that evr1 review games with good intentions but at the end of the day game reviewing is the most unprofessional medium for journalism, people go to big expos and are treated to swag or these cool launch events to sway journalist opinions and let me say journalist opinions are easily swayed.

Ignoring the insulting accusations levelled against the reviewer, can I ask which racing game you would class as the King on this generation of consoles?

The heading is designed to pull you into the article and cannot be taken on it’s own. I felt the review backed up the heading perfectly.

And the Forza 3 launch event was after the review was released and Microsoft didn’t even know we were going to be releasing the review before the event. No moneyhat here unfortunately.

As a bizarre side note, we nearly boycotted this release for reasons that won’t be made public…

GT1 took 5 years GT 2 took 3years GT3 Took 4 years Gt4 took 4 years Gt 5 took 5 years and has the biggest roster of cars and tracks ever with damage modelling weather night, rally, and nascar and it always has tons of easter eggs plus they released gt psp, gthd and gt5 prologue in 5 years…how is GT being slow! so yes lazygamer you are very biased if you actually were ever interested in gt you would know that the wait is always worth it.

I am only voicing my opinion here because you made a blanket accusation against gaming journalism which annoys me greatly. All the reviwers get grilled for the scores they give games and need to be able to justify them. Fanboy accusations are one thing but doubting a journalists integrity is not on.

I don’t understand how you can get mad because a game that you aren’t going to play has gotten a good review score? Why not just… carry on with things. It honestly makes no sense to me that people come in here only to comment and say that Forza 3 is terrible (without having spent a couple of hours with it at the very least) and that a game that is not only not out yet, but is on a different console entirely is just automatically better because you say so.

Has anyone thought for a moment that it may actually be a possibility that both Forza 3 and Gran Turismo 5 may BOTH be great games? One doesn’t have to suck for the other to be good. Each have their own special ingredients, Gran Turismo 5 says weather and rally, Forza 3 says Vinyl Creation, Storefronts and so on.

Just because Forza 3 got a great score doesn’t mean that GT5 is now instantly bad in our minds… it looks like it’s going to be incredible as well, Hell if anything I am one of the biggest Gran Turismo fanboys out there, I organised a full ItalRacer Pro seat with built in sound and the Logitech GT Wheel JUST for GT4.

I didn’t have an original Xbox so Forza 2 was my first of the series, and as a complete petrolhead I was really excited that I now had even more to play.

It kind of upsets me, as a real car fan, that people don’t appreciate the variety that they get and instead choose to just shout at the people on the other side of the fence. I have Forza 3 now and next year, GT5… It’s like a dream come true for people like us.

I said “Return of the king” I didn’t even mention if I meant for this generation, platform or whatever. It’s a fantastic game, you should try it.

As for the comments made about reviewers, disappointing. There are no huge amazing conspiracies, we are just giving our opinions and a lot of the time we have to sit and be insulted for just trying to do our jobs and give our readers a service.

Sorry for offending you guys i know you guys do your best, but forza 3’s marketing will create this kind of vibe.
I love good games, i bought gears 1 and 2 at midnight launches i bought halo, tales of vesperia etc day 1 i love good games, but when you stealth troll calling gt stagnant etc, not a sim if you see all the sneaky bs ms have been spouting i cant just ignore it and condone that kind of behavior and reward them. If i was a normal customer i would not have heard jack about forzas statements and would have bought it without any ill will. but i wont out of principle. Listen theres nothing wrong with talking up your game, but at least justify it and talk up your strengths, forza 3 has better car sounds, liveries, more tracks, online, crash damage etc…. instead of theres no racing game like this ever. GT is stagnant, forza is the only racing sim shipping this gen? Despite talking alot of influence from gts presentation they still constantly trash talk. Fine its a great game dont slag the competition relentlessly it just shows the weaker dogs always bark the most

Nic de Bruyn i remember that name, why you acting like you a saint you have made many gt5 vs forza 3 comparisons and have made many scathing remarks and loaded questions against gt5 you constantly source articles and ask loaded questions about gt5’s graphic fidelity saying that forza looks better?

The comparisions you have linked were half arsed. Clearly GT5 puts the emphasis on its interior car view and not external, you link articles that are comparing gt5p a 2 year old game vs forza 3? Compare a finished game to a game in progress?

Why dont you do an indepth proper comparision in car views 3rd person view instead of copy pasting bogus comparisions.

Forza 3 has its strengths in where it utilizes its graphics and gt 5 also does the same. when gt5 prologue game out it made people say wow it truly looked amazing now that the shine is no longer there you vultures are trying to discredit its graphics at every opportunity.

So nick i think u are a stealth troll trying to pretend you like gt.

if you really into gt then why are posting ridiculous articles without a weighted opinion if you think im talking kak i will just quote what you’ve been saying over the last few months even years about gt. You like to lift negative articles and there tons of legitimate gt articles that are impartial every week at gtplanet but you only link or write articles about sales and forza having better graphics and gt taking too long,

I remember when you were comparing forza 2 to Gt 5 prologue, you were convinced forza 2 would look better than gt a few years back you posted forza 2 photomode pics and were so proud of forza 2 im sure we all no how forza actually looked but it was definately inferior to gt 5p, im so000 on to you!

You prefer Xbox 360 and Forza 3 dont have to be diplomatic about it, you would rather overlook gt5′ advantages and talk up forza’s strengths,
You would even ignore and condone forza’s radical and bs statements against all racing games not just gt! if gt slips up you are ALL OVER IT revealing in its defeat!….case closed. Dont start pretending to be a care bear and liking both games when you’re clearly rooting for forza and undermining gt 5

Umm, I think you are very confused, I didn’t even write for the site back then.

You can also search up any GT5 vs Forza 3 graphics comparisons that I have posted and you will easily see that I have not taken sides in any of my posts.

    I don’t see the dilemma here, Forza is a great game, GT5 is looking really good… what’s the problem? It’s a win/win

Lans if you dont like it,dont play it and dont complain, games are supposed to be entertaining, take your “thick skin” to NeoGaf where you can complain all day, while the real gamers sit down and enjoy their games without reading your flame bait

If I don’t buy Forza 3 then what other console game is there that offers such depth? :silly:

I hear people saying that Forza’s livery editor could be a game on it’s own. The tire wall physics are something unheard of in consoles.

And about weather effects… Is glorious sunshine not a weather effect  . Anyway, how does one know if a lap time in the rain in a game is as accurate as a real lap time in the rain :wassat:

    wtlol!

sneaky buggers you guys overhauled your site in 2006 i think it used to be predominantly black

Anyways now that forzas out and has average to normal sales that wont threaten gt5 plus public reception is mildly happy, not euphoric i can say forza 3 will fade into my far memory.

Cant wait for Blur and Split Second the definitive racers of this generation!
