FUSE review round-up

Fuuuuse

FUSE, the first multi-platform offering from once PlayStation-centric developer Insomniac Games is out this week. I’ve been pretty vocal in my distaste for its change in direction from the once stylised Overstrike to the much more generic FUSE, but I have to admit, its weaponry does seem really fun to use. Insomniac is a master at making fun weapons – but can they translate that weapon agency in to an entire game?

Frankly, it’s looking like a resounding “NO.” Consensus among critics seems to be that there’s little to the game beyond its weapons – though it’s good for some 4 player co-operative fun.

Here’re the scores:

IGN – 6.5
Destructoid – 4/10
EGM – 7.5/10
Game Informer – 7.75/10
Gamespot – 7/10
GamingBolt – 7/10
Giantbomb – 6/10
Polygon – 6.5/10
VentureBeat – 78/100

Seems like some mindless fun, and good for a an evening or two with mates – but I still lament what Overstrike could have been, chocked full of snark, with a distinctive character and charm that’s largely absent from the final product. It really is a pity that EA and Insomniac caved in to the wishes of pre-pubescents – because I remain convinced that Overstrike could have been something special. Instead, it’s now something that most people will be happy to ignore.

Definitely looks interesting. TBH I’d love to see greater depth in most games these days but popular culture seems to want to hate my view 🙁

I’m going to ignore the gaming media on this one, and get my copy in the next few weeks. I have a feeling community reviews will come out and say “Oh wait this is actually pretty good”.
