Would you plumb the depths of the sea for power? With merfolk by your side, the waters are yours to command. Depths of Power showcases the might of instants and sorceries, especially when the conditions are right.
This red blue deck is really flexible, allowing it to react to a myriad of strategies. Searing Spear can be used to either damage your opponent, or to get rid of those pesky creatures in your path. Essence Scatter, one of your assortment of counterspells, makes creatures disappear before they can have any impact on the battlefield. The Fog Bank is an annoying pest, capable of stopping the mightiest creatures that don’t have trample, or just to buy some time before reaching your more important cards. Red blue decks like this one allow you to hide behind defences while burning your opponent, or to delay until you find the cards you need.
The Augur of Bolas plays a risky game: he could net you the spell you want, but could also send another precious resource to the bottom of your library. However, he might find you the answer you seek, getting rid of cards that aren’t perfect for the current situation. Talrand’s Invocation allows you to establish a flying board presence. Four power of creature split across two bodies is a handy advantage, especially if your opponent has no answer to a flying assault. The premium foil of the deck, is also its powerhouse. Talrand, Sky Summoner gives every instant and sorcery you cast a bit of extra sting, in the form of a 2/2 flying drake. If left unanswered, Talrand will eventually fill the sky with winged doom.
As with any multi coloured deck, having the right colour mana at the right time is crucial. Sulfur Falls will help to ensure that you have access to the colours of mana that you need. Because, sadly, Talrand is such a massive target, and you probably cast him on turn four to maximise the gain from him, you might want to add some protection for your wizard. Master of the Pearl Trident will put him out of reach of the slew of one mana burn spells, while also making your Augur of Bolas into a sturdy blocker. If you want to get even more use out of Talrand, Innistrad’s flashback mechanic allows for you to get two drakes off each card. Think Twice is a great draw engine, made even better with Talrand summoning 2/2 drakes to boot.

Remember, every resource, be it creature or otherwise, that you deny your opponent, lowers their chances of beating you. Red and blue decks combine cruel calculation with fiery chaos. Which side will sw
ay you? The options are endless, depending on your play style. Of all the intro packs, this deck is the one which I expect to surprise me the most.
