Metro: Last Light review round-up

Metro 2033 was an unpolished gem, leaving many rather excited for the game’s sequel – filled with the promise of fixing the first game’s problems and smoothing over the rough edges. It seems to have largely succeeded – and delivered a dark and gripping narrative that doesn’t treat the player like a child. With rather extreme violence and a distinct lack of hand-holding, it’s a game for adults. How’s it fared critically?

To be honest, it’s a little mixed. Here are the scores:

Destructoid – 7/10
Digital Spy – 4/5
Eurogamer – 7/10
Gamespot – 9/10
IGN – 7.2
OPM – 9/10
OXM – 8/10
PC Gamer – 80/100
Polygon – 8.5/10
Videogamer – 7/10

Destructoid’s Jim Sterling was actually a little disappointed with the game, and the fact that the core Ranger Mode is tacked on as DLC, but still says that “…Last Light is also a fine game on its own, and if we’re to judge it without the shadow of 2033 looming overhead, we can say it’s a game packed with structurally sound combat, a rewardingly fluid narrative, and an atmosphere that runs the gamut from intriguing to chilling.”

Polygon’s Phil Kollar was a little more pleased, giving the game 8.5 and saying that “4A Games has built a strange, complex world with Metro: Last Light. It’s a grim vision of the future that still inspires hope. It’s a hand-wringing, apologetic shooter that offers great gunplay alongside more peaceful options.Last Light has every opportunity to be bloated and inconsistent, but it never succumbs to the pressure of its own expectations — and that’s worth tolerating a few frustrating technical hiccups.”

Sounds pretty good to me! Will you be picking up Metro: Last Light when it releases locally on Friday?

I’m really looking forward to playing this game – by all accounts, a very atmospheric shooter.
Oh, and I love the header image… But that ain’t no Senna – that’s Hamilton’s helmet… Kind of an insult (depending on who you support)… 😉

Bargain bins are synonymous with ‘bad’ games, which I think is the confusing part as it seems he agrees with IGN.misunderstanding

Yeah, I can see how that could have been interpreted.

I also don’t buy from “that” bin in a store, but I buy from the Steam special section QUITE often. And those games are always damn fine.

I bought Metro 2033 online for R48 (free delivery as well, thanks takealot!) And let me tell you, I would have paid much more for it. Its just so damn fine!

Yeah special and bargain bin aren’t interpreted the same, I always jump on sales too lol! But indeed, that game is much more money than a lot of other games

I actually refuse to browse “that” bin, some of those titles are just not meant to be looked at, let alone be played.

Indeed, but you know, there actually gems hidden away in those bins. In the ps1 days I found a game called Hell Night and whooo buddy, what a gem

First Person Dungeon Crawler Survival Horror made by Konami. Was a brilliant game, up until today I can’t play it, I still get scared!

Indeed, I still have that and Silent Hill 1, made an iso rip and play the games on my phone. should try and get it. I’m not sure on the rules about ROMS as you can’t find the games anymore

I’m also in the “wait till it’s cheaper” queue – my family takes all my money; and my time for that matter. Besides – waiting for the Steam sale to get all those games on my wishlist. Wait till 75% off then grab em.

As a consequence of this miserly approach to life, I am still waiting for Tomb Raider, Hitman, Bioshock, …

Hitman in on special this week!!! $12.54 I think (I got it previously for a bit less, but still a good deal this)

Tomb Raider, Bioshock also on my radar!

Tomb Raider was on special just the other day, but not the 1,000,000 DLCs it has so I didn’t bother.

Where did I say it’s a bad game? I’m saying that I’m not gonna get it right now but when it’s cheaper. IF I had a killer PC I would have got it on release.

GT trailer gave it a 9.1 also. Am definitely picking it up. No review will change my mind really. once I play it, I will see if the reviewers’ score is justified

I want it but won’t buy it day 1. I’m assuming that if it has pre-order DLC, it’ll have post-launch DLC too. I prefer buying a game once.
