Quick, name a Spider-Man villain. No, not the Green Goblin. No, not Eskom. Dammit, not the Jackal! Don’t mention him again! I wanted you to say Venom. Because he’s the star of the latest table from Zen Studios and Pinbal FX 2. Let’s take a look at what’s on offer.
- If you’re unfamiliar with Venon, here’s a quick timeline of his history:
- Spider-Man went to Battleworld in Secret Wars event
- Spider-Man’s costume got torn up like your insides after eating KFC Zinger wings
- Spidey got a new costume, a simple AC/DC homage that put him back in black
- Costume was actually a living symbiote, that tried to bond permenantly with Spidey
- Spidey got the costume off in time, and left it to die
- The symbiote then bonded with vengeful reporter Eddie Brock, because Spidey is a massive dick
- Venom tried to kill Spidey, but eventually stopped to become an anti-hero in the 1990s
- Venom’s various adventures led to him discovering all kinds of new muscles, thanks to the current 1990s art style that saw Rob Liefeld copied gratuitously
- VENOM
All caught up? Awesome. The latest table has plenty of cool visual nods to the character. As well as a voice that sends shivers down my spine. Venom is present, Spidey is swinging around and bastard redneck symbiote son Carnage is eager to bust loose. It’s pretty much your standard pinball table, with a top-heavy section that includes extra bumpers.
It’s cool, it’s slick and it works. If I have any complaints, it’s that the table is a tad too focused on the bottom area, and doesn’t make much use of the entire real estate available. It’s all part of the game I understand, but I would have liked a more even approach. Otherwise, not bad for the comic book fan.
