Around two weeks ago, I told you all about a new indie puzzle game called Quadrilateral Cowboy. I had no interest in playing it myself, but as luck would have it, a copy turned up at Lazygamer HQ, and because Geoff’s a monster (I’m not particularly fond of coding), he gave it to me to review.
I’m so glad he did! I finished Quadrilateral Cowboy last night, and I can comfortably say that it’s one of my favourite gaming experiences this year. I’ll tell you all about it in my review later today, but in the meantime, let’s take a look at what other critics have thought of the game…
Destructoid – 9/10
There are no other games like Quadrilateral Cowboy, and it will likely stay that way. It’s a unique blend of computer science, puzzles, and beautiful storytelling that could only come from Blendo Games. The engine is a bit worse for wear and I definitely wish there were more to play, but damn if this isn’t one of the coolest games out there. Plus, there’s mod support built in, so who knows what the future has in store for this title. Like Gravity Bone and Thirty Flights of Loving before it, this is a game that cannot be missed by fans of the medium.
Polygon – 8/10
Quadrilateral Cowboy teaches you to use its toys, but it doesn’t give a lot of room to use them. It’s clear Blendo is hoping other players take these toys and run with them; there is, in fact, a large button that reads “Mods” right there on the main menu. But as it stands now, Quadrilateral Cowboy feels like a wonderfully designed class in a beautiful, fascinating school that stops just short of showing how much fun you can have after graduation.
Gamespot – 9/10
Quadrilateral Cowboy succeeds in astonishing ways: It makes you feel like an incredibly accomplished computer hacker and agent of espionage. It creates an eccentric, thorough world that feels good to exist in and creates characters you can empathise with, despite the lack of a clear plot thread. Quadrilateral Cowboy presents you with a spectrum of moments, and each moment makes you feel great.
PC Gamer – 80/100
The drawbacks didn’t seriously damage my time with Quadrilateral Cowboy. It’s a smart puzzle game, overflowing with personality. Even though it doesn’t quite reach its full potential, I dare say I’ll return to out-heist my friends and colleagues when the leaderboards go live for the wider gaming community. If you like capers, neat gadgets and weird worlds, it’s a steal.
Game Informer – 9.5/10
Quadrilateral Cowboy is a strange, fantastic journey that will likely charm and test you in equal measure. I expect to come back to it many times over the next few months despite having completed it, searching the environments for nuggets of the story hidden away in the corners of each level and striving to become the best thief this side of cyberspace.
Wow, it looks like everybody enjoyed Quadrilateral Cowboy. I can’t say I blame them – Blendo Games have done a spectacular job.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to write my own review. Spoiler: I loved the game too!
