Return to Castle Wolfenstein in The Old Blood

Wolfenstein: The Old Blood is out this week, as a standalone expansion to what I thought was one of the finest modern old-school shooters in forever. Like its predecessor, it largely shuns the trappings of modern shooter games, sticking to the tried and tested basics. Is it anywhere near as good though?

Reviews for the game seem to be somewhat scarce. We certainly don’t have a copy of the game to play yet – but we’ve found a few reviews to help you decide whether or not you want to goosestep back in to the boots of B.J. Blazkowicz for Nazi-killing mayhem.

Destructoid – 8/10

Wolfenstein: The Old Blood operates just like an old school PC expansion should, and if you likedNew Order, this is a no-brainer. In fact, due to the pulp feel of the second half I even slightly prefer it to the original, and the two interconnected plots are incredibly easy to swallow in an afternoon.

Softpedia – 9/10

TheOldBlood_2

Wolfenstein: The Old Blood is a great follow-up to The New Order, adding plenty of adventures for BJ, not to mention new enemies, weapons, and more. Throw in the Nightmare stages and you have a compelling package with great value for your money.

Attack of the Fanboy – 4/5

TheOldBlood_3

Wolfenstein: The Old Blood pays homage to Return to Castle Wolfenstein in some really neat ways that fans of the long-running franchise will appreciate.  Machine Games does it while keeping their own additions to the series front and center.  While you don’t have to have played Wolfenstein: The New Order to enjoy this prequel, you’ll likely be itching for more if you haven’t.

It seems to be a no-brainer if you loved the modern reboot..which you should have because it’s fantastic.

I still love their approach to these games, such a tribute to the games that started it all…

But is the modern reboot as good as The Last of Us Geoff?

I am waiting for the new reboot to get under R400 – R500 then I will pick it up. It looks like a good game and the reviews all have it as such, but I haven’t longed to play it. Maybe I have had a bit too much of first person games, need to get more third person games going.

I have so many games to play at the moment… And with Witcher 3 and Destiny’s House of Wolves coming this month I don’t see where I would find any more time to play something else as well. Maybe next month then?!

I loved New Order! Looking forward to getting stuck into this soon. Old school FPS fun for the win!
