Ryse review round up – The fall of Rome

Ryse

Since it was first shown off, Crytek’s Ryse has been getting flak. It’s a giant collection of QTE’s, some said. Then it was discovered the game only ran at 900p, which caused another uproar. Recent previews have said that the game was as fun as dialling phone numbers, and Gavin said that the later embargo for the game signalled trouble. It looks like he was right.

Critics have called the game pretty, but pretty damned dull; pretty much like most Crytek games.

Eurogamer – 5/10: There’s no brains, no muscle, no fibre beneath Ryse’s extravagantly engineered good looks – this game rings loud but hollow. Crytek likes to contrast Marius’ moral strength with the vanity and cruelty of Nero and his made-up sons, but Ryse feels like a product of their dying empire. It’s just empty decadence.

ryse1Joystiq – 2.5/5 : Ryse: Son of Rome falls into the trap of your typical launch game: it does well to show off the power of the system, but it’s slim on substance. Production value aside, Ryse is short, easy and lacks the punch of other action games. For all of it’s pomp and flash, Ryse: Son of Rome is a shallow bore.

Polygon – 6/10: It’s a gorgeous, dark and bloody tableau. But all that visual beauty and dramatic gravitas goes to waste with an aimless plot and a monotonous combat system. Ryse has all the guts of next-gen — often quite literally — but none of the glory.

IGN – 6.8/10: Ryse has an entertaining story and sky-high production values. The gameplay that’s thereryse2 isn’t bad – it just stops in its tracks before it gets anywhere near close to demanding. The multiplayer mode has some neat ideas, like a deadly, shifting Colosseum, but it’s hamstrung by the same combat issues that affect the main campaign. But if spectacle is what you want,Ryse: Son of Rome will keep you entertained.

Shacknews – 5/10: Ryse: Son of Rome had potential, but Crytek did too little to expand upon its repetitive combat. While I ran through the campaign in about five hours, it honestly felt like 20. And with the formula becoming more and more boring with each by-the-numbers execution, the addition of throwaway collectibles, like vistas and scrolls, couldn’t save this game. Ryse doesn’t come close to living up to Roman standards.

That sounds dull. Once again, Crytek’s proved that they’re wizards when it comes to graphics, but not especially good at actually making games. This was one of the Xbox One’s big 3 launch titles..and it’s a big dud.

Man, saw this one coming a mile away. This game was touted as the XBox One’s “big thing” with Titanfall.
The curse of the launch title strikes again.

So, XB1 launch exclusives so far:
2 out – Forza and Ryse.

Forza = mostly good (my bias makes me drool over it!).
      Ryse = pretty but sucky.

So… Titanfall, it’s up to you. No pressure then…

Although, in lologon’s land Ryse still outscores Killzone, and therein lies the shill. Maybe that’s why they gave Killzone such a ridiculous score?

Wow, shilologon didn’t give it a 9/10… Colour me surprised. I mean if Gies’ MS marketing firm struggles to praise it (and they get paid to shill), then you know you’ve got a stinker.

True. Most launch games fail because there deadline is way to tight. The only games that do well at launch are games like Resogun, Wipeout, Lumines etc etc those are more simple games. Dont have major depth and story behind it.

Polygon and Verge said XBox (not yet launched) had great launch line ups and used this as one of their criteria to give XBox a greater score over the PS. The PS suffered criticism from lack of great launch titles and hardware complains (after launch) they reported. Now that (didn’t—>) Ryse received disappointing reviews, XBox ratings will still read the same regardless of this. Some reviews even say the side-USB-ports on the XBox are used for recharging the controllers.. (seriously). There are many distortions, fabrication and ill-patterns I’ve picked up when it comes to console/game review, and considering the amount of time we spent reading these, it’s just (disappointing)..

(Update: Ignore everything above..) Ryse might be after all. I’ll decide when I buy my XBoxOne in 2015.

lol follow Jeremy Conrad (ManaByte) on twitter, he absolutely crucified Polygon for their livestream – which essentially counters their own review of the xbone. During the livestream the console just doesn’t work as it should. Voice commands don’t work, transitions are sluggish etc.
