Toki Tori 2+ might look all sweet and innocent, but once it has you in its claws it will gloriously abuse your brain, and you will love it.

Soft colours of yellow, green and blue. Cute little birdies, bubble-burping froggies and alien fruit. These are but a few of the things that make the game look like a tame puzzle adventure hatching, but it isn’t. It’s the devil, the devil I tell you!

You play as an unlikely hero, who sets out to save his world from a mysterious and dark black goo. To find out what the hell is going on, you’ll need to puzzle solve your way to the core of the Island. The game starts off easing you into the process of figuring things out for yourself, lures you into a false sense of security.

In Toki Tori 2+ there is absolutely no hand-holding. No tips, no guidance, just you and the game and a couple of traps along the way. Making use of your two core abilities, stomping and whistling, you have to manipulate your surroundings and its inhabitants to help you overcome all sorts of cunning obstacles.

By exploring the world and the creatures in it, you learn how they can aid you and how they respond to your abilities. As you get deeper into the game, you’ll have to strategically plan your progress or die. Die a brutal death and as you shed a tear for the little yellow hero, get back to the drawing board.

Toki Tori 2+ has a great balance of different environments and game mechanics; you won’t be stuck in the same sunny surroundings for too long, before you plunge into a darker, harsher theme of levels. The fun of the game is exactly what drives it, figuring everything out instead of having handed to you on a silver platter. There were a couple of moments where I felt like cussing at my PC and laughing at the same time. In fact, I did just that. Clever, clever little game it is.

The world is big and tempts you onto all kinds of different routes. You can either choose to stay the course or explore some off-road expert puzzles. There are a number of really awesome things hidden, and if you don’t explore, you would have never known they were there. Finding everything this game has to offer will take you a huge number of tries and many, many fun filled hours. The game easily offers 15 to 20 hours of gameplay, with the added Steam Workshop, you get more than value for your money.

I really loved the Steam Workshop integration for Toki Tori 2+, for this game it’s actually useful and very easy to navigate. The Steam Workshop for the game allows you to create your own levels and upload them. Getting to play user generated content is easy and seamless. All I had to do was go to the Steam Workshop in the in-game menu, subscribe to a level and it instantly appeared in my library. Once you’ve subscribed to the level, you can immediately start playing it without having to restart the game.

As for flaws, I can’t say that there was even once that I felt like a saw something bugged or broken. I was more than pleasantly surprised at how amazing the game has been designed. Toki Tori 2+ allows you to choose between two options of how you’d like to play the game. You can either play with your mouse and keyboard, or by connecting a controller to your PC.

Toki Tori 2+ is an incredibly fun platformer, but don’t let its cute exterior deceive you. It’s a hell of a brain teaser, for even the manliest man.

Did anyone ever play Toki? Ape-man side-scroller game from the early 90s. Loved it, but like almost all old Jap games it was ridiculously tough.
