Is the Xbox One still failing to deliver the goods?

I couldn't resist, sorry

A completely unsubstantiated claim has lit up the Internet this morning stating that the Tomb Raider definitive edition is sub par on the Xbox One compared to how it plays on the PlayStation 4

A website going by the name of Rocket Chainsaw has posted an exclusive article this morning stating that they have a verified source stating that the game plays at an average of 60 frames per second on the PlayStation 4 while the Xbox One’s performance is closer to 30fps.

The Xbox One build can technically reach around 45 fps, though this performance is generally only achieved during the most empty, simplest environments. For most of your play, and during action scenes, the Xbox One build will sit on around 30 fps. On the other hand, the PlayStation 4 build will attempt to hit 60 fps as often as possible, and does a pretty good job of doing so, but does have slight dips under 60 fps during certain scenarios.

They do also state that the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are both rendering at 1080p but that the performance is noticeably worse on the Xbox One.

Now a rumour like this from an unknown website is not something we would ever take seriously but with the recent Xbox One games all performing worse than the same game on the PlayStation 4 we are slightly inclined to at least give this report some possibility of being true.

Crystal Dynamics’ Scot Amos has confirmed that the Ps4 version runs at 60fps.

“Looking here, this is the PS4 version running at 60FPS, again at 1080p,” Amos said during a GamesRadar livestream last night. “That’s awesome for that to be able to showcase because when you get your hands on it you can feel it.”

Thankfully we don’t need to wait long as the game hits shelves next week and if this is true expect a detailed and honest review of the technical abilities of each title by Eurogamer’s Digital Foundry. Until then we just have to wait and see but at least we have this cool infographic from HalloweenCostumes to keep us entertained until then. It’s pretty big so click the snippet to view the entire thing

Why? I really liked the Xbox 360..until MS went bananas, dropped exclusives and went Kinect crazy. The whole X1 debacle is making me sad.

It simply may be true, perhaps the X1 is simply not on the same level as Ps4 in some regards

I am talking from a biased point here, I have always been a Sony guy, never had much love for 360, played it but my heart was always with PS.
Microsoft got too big for their booties, and have been behaving like a drunk clown on a unicycle for the last while, so them getting a kick in the teeth is why I am happy with this.
Equal competition is good, but, if Sony did a better job then people need to know, MS can only blame themselves.

            Did someone say bananas?

I agree, the first two or three years were actually magical (if you were in the xbox camp). There were a wide variety of exclusives, and their focus was on the games. The hardware wasn’t ideal but you couldn’t fault titles like viva pinata, project gotham, gears of war, etc. They definitely dropped the ball the last 5 years or so, and the Boner debacle is just the straw that tickled the camels back.

            January 23, 2014 at 12:08

Well here’s why i went with the Xbox 360 in the last gen:

It was a fuckton cheaper than the ps3, and it was a better performing console for a long time.

In this gen, neither of those are true.

            January 23, 2014 at 12:09

Same. I only got a PS3 fairly recently – last 3 years or so (although in gamer sense that’s during the stone age).

err, no. argument makes no sense. if you choose an inferior system then you should suffer the consequences. then again, i think my fiesta really should perform as well as your bmw…scrap that, im with you, rainbows and lollipops for EVERYONE

          • Exalted Overlord Geoffrey Tim

            January 23, 2014 at 12:38

They’re meant to be competitors within the same consumer space; a fiesta and a BMW are not in tye same price bracket.

          • Sageville

            January 23, 2014 at 14:09

Surely that went out of the window when MS went more media machine than gaming machine. I’d rather using this analogy….

            PS4 – BMW
XBone – Outside TV Broadcast Van

Now MS / Sony aren’t really competing for the space market space.

            January 24, 2014 at 13:26

I was using an over-simplified example to get my point across (which was clearly needed). In any business it’s good to be better than your competitor; it’s what you strive for. Why SHOULD competitors be forced (by some cosmic entity or naïve ideals) to be equal?

            This is what you wrote:

Because it’s not good for anyone if ANY single system dominates another. EVERYBODY should be able to play games at their best, regardless of their choice of system.

So no, actually I don’t need to change my analogy, but let’s make it easier to understand. If two people respectively buys a Mercedes and a BMW of equal price value and comparative models (won’t state the models lest my argument be damned) and the one (wont state which one to not upset any BMW or Mercedes fans) is faster than the other one, and speed is what they were purchased for, then it’s the person whose CHOICE it was to buy the slower one’s problem.

            January 23, 2014 at 14:00

I don’t see the problem, everyone dogpiled on the PS3 last gen like it was the cool new thing to do, for what, the first 5 years? Seemed to work out fine in the end there.

Plus, you gotta admit, it’s kinda ironic, seeing all this ‘Oh Poor Xbox’, after the beating Sony took on the PS3 in the beginning. I’m still curious where all this concern was back then.

I won’t necessarily add to it, but I sure do love grabbing a box of popcorn and watching it happen.

If the resolution and detail is identical, it’s very possible if you look at the cross platform games launched until now. Either way, most console gamers don’t give a hoot and just enjoy the games. Most also choose their platform based either on loyalty or what exclusives they prefer and not really fps numbers… If this was the case, PS3 would not have sold the way it did… And just look at the PS2 / Wii sales during the last generation.

If the performance stats were the other way around, I still would have bought the PS4…

This must be because the Kinect is using up some resources while you jump to jump, point your finger to aim, shout “PEW PEW!” to shoot, feign a bow-and-arrow motion for the bow-and-arrow, make climbing motions to climb, squat to crouch, etc etc

As someone working in IT, the cloud is just a buzz word that impresses managers.

Granted, there are some very awesome practical applications for it, but MS failed to actually give anyone examples, only hypotheticals. Maybe they have an excellent cloud infrastructure, but they aren’t using it for anything truly revelational.

This is disheartening. Games should be the same when they are cross platform. MS is right now planning on making football viewable at 60fps. A once a year sport is getting more attention than games all year round. I swear if this is true I will consider this the norm for games being inferior on Xbox. The next step would be to return this watered down gaming machine at 60fps.

I disagree,,I believe games should all be optimized for each specific platform to get the most out of the platform’s capabilities, none of this dumbing-down one platform’s game to prevent a lesser platform’s version looking bad.

Maybe i used the wrong choice of words but that is what i meant. All cross platform games should look at their best and what i mean by that is MS needs to do something for these games to be better optimized. Instead on making football look at its best.

Does this game actually need 60fps? I’m not a console player, so maybe I’m missing the point. More framerate + more resolution = more penis size compensation. I get that. But on PC, I optimised the game for 60fps, and didn’t feel that it added anything. It felt more comfortable and cinematic playing at a lower framerate. Having said that, if I do win a next (now) gen console in a dodgy email spam lucky draw, I hope that it will be a PS4. Don’t need no X-HAL ONE 9000 in my life.

      sigh

There’s a big difference between 30 and 60fps. 60 is far more fluid.

And I suppose 15 years ago you were going round saying 1024×768 is penis size compensation too? Geezuz it’s called progress. What a weird comment.

I know there is a big difference between the two. My point is that the extra fluidity added no value to this particular game. As long as there are no massive framerate drops that would hurt the gameplay experience, I reckon it is good enough.

And no, I have always been a fan of higher resolutions, but I will adjust it lower if the performance suffers.
