Some directors are in hot demand right now and it would seem that Selma director, Ava DuVernay is one of those. She recently turned down an offer from Marvel to direct Black Panther and she has now been approached by two more studios to direct films for them. She did a sterling job with Selma, but what is interesting is how these next films she is looking to work on are completely different for her. Although still a young director, she has proven her potential and it appears range as well, as studios have a lot of faith in her to pull off movies that are vastly different.

According to Deadline, DuVernay has just been signed up by Disney to direct A Wrinkle in Time, which is an adaptation of the 1963 Newbery Medal-winning Madeleine L’Engle fantasy classic novel that has a script by Oscar-winning Frozen writer and co-director Jennifer Lee. A Wrinkle In Time involves a young girl whose government scientist father has gone missing after working on a mysterious project called a tesseract, which involves being transported to a fifth dimension with mysterious inhabited planets. She takes part in a search for her father and sees some incredible creatures along the way.

However, it has also been revealed that DreamWorks has also been in the mix with an offer for her to direct an upcoming film titled Intelligent Life, which is a sci-fi thriller scripted by Colin Trevorrow and his Jurassic World collaborator Derek Connolly. Intelligent Life is set to star 12 Years A Slave Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o attached to a fable about a UN worker in a department designed to represent mankind if there was ever contact with aliens, who falls for a mystery woman who turns out to be one. That film is produced by Frank Marshall, Trevorrow and Big Beach principals Peter Saraf and Marc Turtletaub.

For now, it seems that Disney being the first to jump at her after what was appararently revealed to be a 6 month courting period with the director and will get their movie made first. DreamWorks may still decide to go with someone else now though dpeending on thier timelines, so it will be interesting to see if they wait for her schedule to free or not. Both films though represent a big step up from what DuVernay has been used to in terms of budget and I think its great to see her efforts rewarded with that kind of trust and from a transformation perspective, great to see them willing to invest in an African-American female too.

And we all know Hollywood needs some diversity, don’t we? Too soon?
