The Xbox One’s in a bit of sales upswing at the moment, mostly thanks to the Redmond company slashing $50 off of its North American retail price. It’s a tactic that certainly helped Nintendo ignite the 3DS’ momentum, and it looks like it’s helping Microsoft get more Xbox ones into people’s homes. the company’s announced that it’s just shipped 10 million consoles.

Yes, shipped – which means consoles sold in to retailers, and not sold through to customers.

“The response to this wave of blockbuster game releases and new bundles has been amazing, and sales have skyrocketed since the new price took effect on Nov. 2,” executive Yusuf Mehdi said on Xbox Wire. “Compared to the previous week, Xbox One sales in the US have more than tripled, which is exciting as more and more friends will be playing together this holiday.

“As we head into the busy holiday season Xbox One led generation 8 console sales in the US for the past two weeks. Shortly, we will have sold in to retailers more than 10 million Xbox One consoles.”

There’s definitely been a shift in momentum in the “console wars”. Where just a few months ago, the Xbox One was a bit of a black sheep, the system’s now looked at with kinder eyes. It is of course worth noting that the PlayStation 4 is still very much king. Sony announced the 10 million sell through number four months ago, with current sales to consumers topping 13.5 million at the moment. It’s easily reaching 15 million by year’s end. Sony’s machine has outsold Microsoft’s for 9 months straight, though that may actually change for November thanks to the price cut and impending Black Friday sales.

In the end both systems are selling rather well, demonstrating that console gaming is still a thing, and isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

If Microsoft shipped 10 million to retail then Sony shipped 20 million to retail. Because Xbox One is so heavily depended on internet, the numbers will always be around 50% less.
Example. Xbox 360 sold about 83 million units. Xbox Live – 48 million.

So if Sony has sold about 15 million units sold that leaves Xbox One at round about the 7 million mark.

Considering how much they have cut off the system, it’s not unlikely they sold this many. Meanwhile, PS4 still sells the most overall and it still has a reasonable price.
