5.3 million PlayStation 4’s sold

Sony’s announced a pretty impressive milestone ahead of the launch of the PlayStation 4 is Japan; the company’s already sold 5.3 million of its latest console.

“I am thrilled that so many customers around the globe have continued to select PS4 as the best place to play throughout and beyond the holiday season,” said Andrew House, President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc in a press release  “We are delighted that according to the NPD Group’s latest data, PS4 was January’s top-selling console in the United States. The PS4 system’s momentum just keeps growing stronger, and we are extremely grateful for the continued passion and support of PlayStation fans.”

Sony’s PlayStation 4 has yet to be released in its native country of Japan, but word is that excitement is nearing fever pitch.

“ February 22 sees the launch of PS4 in Japan, and I’m looking forward to Japanese fans sharing the excitement of the deep social capabilities and entertainment experiences only possible on PS4.”

Interestingly, according to the latest stats Nintendo’s Wii U has now sold through just under 6 million units since its release in November 2012. By the end of this month, the PlayStation 4 will have eclipsed that console’s lifetime sales in just 5 months of general availability. It’s impressive, considering that the console is still in short supply very nearly everywhere. The PS4 is in the enviable position of being on track to selling through more than ten million units within its first year.

According to the criminally inaccurate VGChartz, the Xbox One has sold through a total of 3.44 million units to date, though we expect that number to be slightly higher. Whichever side of the fence you sit, you have to admit that this new generation of consoles is off to an incredible start.

Damn, that’s impressive… what’s more impressive is that 5.3 million people can actually afford the console! lol

The great thing here is that Sony over shot their expectations. They estimated 5 million sold at the end of the financial year. Still almost 2 months left (and a release in Japan). They should hit 6+ million.

Just more than a month. Sony’s year end is March 31st.

They should crack 6 Million by then but it would be excellent news if they went over 7 Million by then 😉

“But this is unfair journalism! you can’t compare it with the Xbox One sales because they haven’t released world wide”

Said it before the fanboys start complaining… The fact is that this is MS own fault for screwing up the release of the Xbox One, but none the less 3.44 million sales is not bad for a console that hasn’t been release world wide yet.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but could this also be due to the fact that some countries have different regulations on broadcasting and TV rights? Would this not have affected the release because they wanted it to be a home entertainment system?

I wouldn’t be surprised if that has something to do with it. But then again, they’ve been planning this thing for years (I assume).

One would assume, but from all the other stuff that has come out of the wood works since the announcement, I highly doubt it.

They should have released a version for the other countries with that functionality on lockdown until everything was sorted out

            February 18, 2014 at 11:08

I agree. People have already demonstrated how they’re willing to wait for functionality to be added – like decent blu-ray playback for both of them.

What surprised me is that the PS4 sold more in the USA than the BONE did in January… Isn’t the USA supposed to be the home of the BONE, wasn’t it created solely for that market???? Seems like there are gamers in the USA as well… Who knew?!?!?!?

… And in response, the Titanfall hype is going to get even more nauseating and contrived. Microsoft will be desperate to close this gap, and even more so, since they’ve banked all their hopes on EA’s COD with Mechs!

So that’s what’s causing the tremors I felt this morning in the Mother City – all the Japanese running to their local store to camp out for their PS4… 😉

Seriously though, that’s a great achievement for Sony, whichever way you slice it. And opening it up to Japan (their home base) is only going to strengthen those sales even more (won’t be surprised if it, stock allowing, doubles in short order).

The age old debate of Microsoft using shipped instead-of-sold-numbers will again be a factor this time round. A lot of folks on the internet have pointed out that the PS4 numbers are actual sold through, whereas Microsoft is adding to their tally by throwing in sold to retailers.
